While your google pulls up a lot of picture with TPS visible, all the ones I looked at are from VWvortex which ran a different version of the engine. It is a 2 stage TB not a single plate like a recent TB has.

My 90s reference was maybe a bit of a sweeping statement, the technology in that car is ancient.

You're absolutely right. Up to 1994 they had 3pins switch and from 1995 they had throttle valve control module with the 8pin connector.
