Harding Performance DSG Software & Hardware program

Harding Performance DSG Software & Hardware program.

DQ 200 (7 speed dry clutch – Golf TSI, Polo, Skoda 118 etc)

    Performance Software:

Standard recommended upgrade pack: Recommended retail $995-00

    - Custom D and S programs
    - 1st gear Re-activation
    - Less unwanted downshift on light acceleration

All new 7-speed DSG’s with dry clutch have software “compromises”. They shift overly early, and do not make great use of 1st gear. This causes annoying vibrations when the DSG shifts from 1st to 2nd gear, slow reaction on the throttle from low rpm and low speeds, possible damage to transmission & excessive wear on the dual mass flywheel & clutch packs.

Surveyed customers tend not to use “S” mode as it holds the gear far too long for regular city driving, and find “D” mode too lazy.

Our new software solves this problem.

In D Mode we give you much better drivability, and the S mode becomes much more useful. When driving in D, most 1.4TSI’s shift over to 7th gear at 58km/h, we set this to 78km/h. This means the car will not drive at the super low 1150rpm anymore. The engine will stay above 1400rpm. No noticeable change in fuel consumption.

1st gear reactivation, the 7 speed DSG’s do not use 1st gear any longer, only when taking off from a complete standstill. This causes abnormal wear & shuddering in the clutch packs (particularly the 1st to 2nd gear change). When driving below 17km/h the throttle response is poor as the gear is too high & RPM too low. Our software uses first gear for speeds up to 17kmph.

Other options: (add more than one option and the price becomes $199 per option)

    - Torque limiter delete $299-00
    - Torque capacity threshold upgrade up to 350Nm $299-00
    - Max. shifting RPM $299-00
    - Raised downshift rpm $299-00

Our standard package is recommended for most "enthusiasts", the other "options" are really for someone who is pushing the limits or who have a custom request.

If you have a race specific application or big turbo application, then tied with in with different engine remapping, we should have a transmission solution for you.

DQ 250 (6 speed wet clutch – Golf GTI, TDI, R, Audi S3, Skoda VRS etc)

    Performance Software:

Standard recommended upgrade pack: Recommended retail $1295

    - Custom D and S programs
    - Torque capacity upgrade to 450-500Nm
    - Upgraded clutch clamping
    - Less unwanted downshift on light acceleration
    - Shifting time (only applicable for early models)
    - Manual Mode upshift control
    - Modified launch control rpm

The DQ250 transmission in standard form suffers from much unwanted downshift. When we increase the torque output & improve the torque curve with chip tuning, then the unwanted downshift can be a bigger annoyance. With light acceleration, the DSG tends to downshift 1 to 3 gears; this causes delays (lag). After carrying out our software upgrade, the throttle response is greatly improved and the car will accelerate using low rpm torque in a higher gear, instead of shifting down and using high rpm horsepower in a lower gear. No lag because of an unwanted shift, but immediate response on the throttle.

The DSG Torque limiter is increased, depending on the transmission model, we increase the torque limiter between 50 and 150NM depending on application. We also have custom applications for big turbo conversions.

Clutch life will be extended with less slip due to the upgraded clutch clamping option.

Other options: (add more than one option and the price becomes $199 per option)

    - Torque limiter full delete $299-00
    - Max. shifting RPM increased $299-00
    - Raised downshift rpm $299-00
    - Custom new generation files for old models $299-00

DQ 500 (7 speed wet clutch – TTRS, VW Transporter T5.5, Tiguan 2012 etc)

    Performance Software:

Standard recommended upgrade pack: Recommended retail $1195

    - Custom D and S program
    - Re-activation of 1st gear
    - Raised downshift rpm
    - Less unwanted downshift on light acceleration

Most of new 7-speed DSG’s the factory software is far less than optimal. They shift very early and do not use first gear unless moving off from a complete stop. This causes poor reaction on the throttle from low rpm and low speeds, also shudder and possible damage to gearbox and flywheel.

Our new software resolves these issues. The D program will give a much better drivability to the car, and the S program will become much more useful. When driving in D normally the car drives in 7th gear at 80km/h, this will become 6th gear. Therefore the rpm at 80km/h will become +/- 1450rpm instead of the original 1200rpm. No noticeable change in fuel consumption.

Other options: (add more than one option and the price becomes $199 per option)

    - Torque limiter full delete $299-00
    - Torque capacity threshold upgrade to ~ 700Nm $299-00
    - Modified launch control rpm $299-00
    - Max. shifting RPM increased $299-00

    Hi Guy,

just spoke to Paul from Muller & Muller about getting the tune. He said he's waiting for you to come to Sydney to train a couple of techs before they can reflash the DSG on my car

Any idea when you're coming to Sydney?

A few other questions I have for the DQ200 tune
    1. Is the new program detectable by VW & what would they see?
    2. Is this different to the 2012 DSG reflash for DQ200 that VW have? I had mine done 2 months ago and I do notice that the upshifts are less aggresseive. Shift to 6th gear is now only at 58km/h and 7th gear is around 69km/h (75 indicated on speedo). Is this similar to the shift points in your program? I think the main difference would be that VW's program still keep 2nd gear for crawling starts, but I think you're suggesting that this would be 1st gear under your tune? (I think this is my main interest in your tune).

    3. Is it an issue if I use this tune having had my clutch packs replaced twice for my DQ200 unit? My understanding is that the shims have now also been changed twice and are custom made to the spaces in my specific clutch housing (to account for the specific wear on my car). Would the new program "adapt" to individual wear on clutches or does it "learn" where the friction points are for individual gear boxes?

    4. The VW reflash is also better uphills & will now kick down at the slightest bit of struggle. This is a big improvement compared to previously. Is your tune also more amenable to downshift on inclines? Inclines were a big problem on the old program as it would stubbornly hold onto a high gear instead of kicking down a gear.

I think that's it for now. I may have a few more questions down the track

Glad you didn't have a lot of Questions

1: No, we have current made it read the same as the extracted code, there are a few options we have for renaming the box code with different identification numbers for different reasons, but we have chosen this at this stage. This is the best option for vehicles under factory warranty.

2: Yes, its different - VW have come a long way to address some stuff. The shift points are not fixed as they will vary with throttle opening & load. It also varies a lot depending on what's currently in your transmission (version, gear ratio's, year etc) so can't answer that one until we have a copy of your software in our hands. There are literally hundreds of software variations for the 7 speed from the VW group.

3: The adaptation & clutch adjustment (mechanical and hydraulically controlled) are not changed. The shims get changed only when swapping out the clutch packs. We have seen this step "missed" on some cars when they get repaired. There are 11 different size shims in a shim kit, so nothing custom made.

4: Cant really compare because I don't have your car (and I don't have a test course for that sort of test) - but certainly the gear selection (lower for the same list of variables) makes a good difference on engine braking - certainly our own Polo GTI shows a good difference here (and its a pretty late revision).

Thanks for the useful answers Guy. btw I knew I had another question:

Until I can get the DSG reflash, is it best to keep the DSG in manual mode to preserve the clutches? I've noticed that mode or the feral sports mode are keener to kick down to 1st gear. You've mentioned your tune kicks down to 1st gear for anything under 17km/h... so my thinking is naturally keep the darn thing in Manual mode

Anything you can do to keep it in a gear like you would normally drive a manual will help. I think personally that 90% of the "shudder" issues are caused because of this. That slow speed 2nd to 3rd then 4th is a killer.
