Golf R performance upgrade NEED ADVICE!!!

    Hi folks,

I'm planing to performance upgrade my 2011 R for the first time. I have decided to get the APR tuning. My question is I am thinking of getting the VWR cold air intake at the same time? Will I see a great power increase from the intake? What about the combination of apr tuning + HPFP? Considering both combinations will cost similar, which one do you suggest?

    thanks a lot.

You wont see a big gain from the intake only a slight one. The hfpf will give a significant gain when done with the rail valve but to take full advantage of it I would change your down pipe. My car saw its biggest power advantage with a tune and the downpipe. The intake just helped smooth out the power delivery and makes some cool noises. Any changes after that will be incremental.

    Golf R Tuning Options

I suggest you read up about the options available and make an informed decision.

There are a heap of threads already on this topic. Here's a bit of light reading for you:

There's also a number of build threads which are also quite informative.

You should be reasonably informed after reading this lot.

Once you've done this then I would go and have a talk to a couple of tuners and decide what suits you in terms of extent of modification and also your future upgrade path (if you choose).

Best to go into it being informed. Things don't always go to plan and you have to be confident that if things do go pear-shaped that whoever you're dealing with has both the capability and business ethics to make things right.

You shouldn't go wrong if you choose any one of the tuners that is a sponsor on this forum.

To help out with the OP's questions:

Stage 1 software only (Version 3.4).

Adding Fuel Pump (HPFP) will add ~ 20kw & 20nm in the mid range (not peak power) but in an AWD Golf R, this is where you want the extra punch.

An intake (VWR tubular), we see gains from ~ 2300 rpm all the way through to redline. Up to 9kw @ wheels and 15nm.

The intake will give you increased intake noise.

A downpipe or full exhaust will also add ~ 9awkw with increased noise. We have quite a few customers making well in excess of 220kw's at the wheels on mainline dyno's all around the country.

    Hope that helps.

P.S. That is the order we would do it above! (Software / pump / intake / exhaust)

One of my mates on this forum had his R tuned at Miranda a few years back. Best money he ever spent according to him. He trekked all the way from The Hills to get it done. You would only have to drive 5km.

PM me for details as I don't wish to start a "my tunes better than your tune" peeing contest.

I would suggest Pump and Tune if you only want to do two things. Reason being the car will still sound nice and quiet but go like a rocket

I have the VWR intake and a Full Exhaust and it is quite loud from both ends of the car.

One other thing to consider is an Intercooler upgrade, this will help with the heat factor and minimize the ECU sucking precious power away when intake temps get a bit high.

Thanks for all advices above. So for this time, APR ECU tune + HPFP. Hope the improvement will suprise me.

By the way, I have been quoted $2550 for ECU+HPFP installed. Is the price reasonable?

    Thanks all again!

Sounds something I would like to have at this stage.

will save the CAI and exhaust change for the later. Do you suggest the rail valve needs to be changed at the same time with the HPFP?

    CHeerS!
