Golf R options
Looking for advice on options around an upgrade for my R.
Not looking to do hardware, just a flash to improve low end responsiveness. I drive mostly in the city and the turbo lag, whilst not terrible, is still not the best for city driving.
I was speaking to someone today who suggested steering clear of the APR Stage 1... so, whilst I've seen the website for APR Stage 1, I'd like to know what other options are out there that are available now. Also, any feedback from anyone who has had any of these done would be great.

Any reason not to go for APR? Did your friend give a reason?
If they are basing this on tuning of another vehicle, then there will be differences.
I'd look to the UK VW sites for opinions as there would be a few tuned R's running around.
Have a look at Bluefin, they are new to Aus, but seem to be working closely with VW in the UK and getting good results.

Pepe, let us know what you should "Steer Clear" of with the APR upgrade? - I'm curious!
Both our Sydney dealers have upgraded many, many Golf R's & can put you in touch with customers directly.

Guys
Not looking to offend any APR fans/dealers... just want to know what other options are out there
As for the person that said "don't go APR", don't really know the guy from a bar of soap. I'm just trying to be objective here and find out what options are out there.

I have APR Stage One on my S3,which is mechanically pretty much identical to the Golf R,and it's excellent!

So digging around... anyone have any experience with GIAC? Trying to figure out if they actually even have one for the R.

In light of what this other unknown person told you, the best objective approach would be to start by taking up Guy's (APR) offer to put you in touch with some real live R owners who've done the APR upgrade, have a good chat to them and possibly get a ride in their cars as well. Much better than listening to someone you don't know from a bar of soap. If what he said has any grounding at all it'll come to light pretty quick.
That would give you a good basis to then start your research into other tuners and eventually help make a decision.

It is totally up to you to shop around and see what else is out there but beware of the 'Chip wars', many bag on APR because they use Giac and vise versa it is just like the Holden vs Ford mentality.
All I can say is that I too researched for months before chipping my GTI and I was most satisfied by the consistent AF ratios and spread of torque in the APR software; which I might add has copped a proper flogging 6 days a week for 35'000 Km's.
