Golf GTI Tuning (Viezu - DSG + ECU)

    Hey Guys,

I am sure there are quite a few posts already on subjects related to this but I don't seem to find much context to what I want.

I have spoken to dealer here in Melbourne who is going to install Viezu race tune on my car. I wanted to go for an APR tune but a lot of people suggested that I stay away from big boys and also that Viezu/Ottienger/GIAC would do it as per my car mapping and all. After doing a bit of research I decided to go ahead with Viezu tune atleast for a month trial as to see if this really helps sort out the normal lag issues I have.

I spoke to this dealer and I wanted to check some info on the gains I will get with the tune mainly sorting the turbo lag I get with the stock one. He suggested that I should go for DSG tune as well as ECU tune. I was only after the ECU tune but he mentioned that for smooth power delivery and shifting DSG tune would be beneficial.

I don't really like to thrash my car as my main purpose of buying it was to have fun while traveling to work and also some weekend fun at times. Mine is usually suburban driving with not too much of throttle application. I do find a lot of lag every now and then which I think ECU tune would sort out as per comments I have read on different threads.

I am just confused as to whether I should get both or just get them one by one and feel the difference.

I don't have a local dealer as I have to get my car serviced at VW service centre only due to my work policy.

Would appreciate if you guys can shed some light on what are the differences and whether it would really help me in day to day driving. I will be going to get it installed this Saturday and have to make up mind. I am happy to pay for both but my main concern is will it really boost too much of my driving pleasure. If not then I will just go with the ECU Tune.

    Thanks for your help.

    Regards

I like getting things done one at a time so you can feel the difference with each mod. However I hear from your situation it may not be that convenient so it may be better just to get both if you think you need it.

DSG tunes generally adjust the shift pattern. I have the DSG tune sold through APR dealers on my car (not an APR product). It has certainly improved the general driveability of the car - particularly in D which I now use for 99% of my driving.

Given you don't hammer the car , like myself, you are just after a more linear acceleration then you may fine the tune does most of what you are after. It does give a great midrange and make D mode much better, you will also find you adjust your driving style and acceleration application. I have had a stage 1 for a couple of years now and quite happy with that only.

Get the tune first and see how you go. The tune alone will improve the overall behaviour of the DSG (torque limits are adjusted in the ECU tune)

The DSG will adapt as I am sure you are aware - both to your driving style and the new tune.

There is no need to get them done together.

As for turbo lag - most of the "lag" is due to the FBW set up on the Golf's, not turbo lag. There is almost no turbo lag as such on the stock Golf GTI's. There is also some DSG "lag" both by design and as an artefact.

The tune alone will resolve much of that

Ummm No. You do know that's some marketing BS that was spread around a while back don't you ? Torque limits are hard coded in the DSG, there are also limiters in the ECU but not like this implies. Actually you will never hit a torque limiter with one of these tunes in either the box or ECU... not even come close. SF's car will not hit a limiter either so there is/was no need to modify it as such.
    Sorry I'm nitpicking..... carry on

    Thanks guys,

I have decided to run with ECU tune first for couple of weeks before getting the DSG tune.

    Appreciate the help
