the golf is not dead.
Don't do it if you already haven't. The cordoba is a far heavier car and the internal valving of the seat shocks will be totally different and would almost make your mk1 undrivable.
I once asked a friend of mine(suspension expert) if I could put my heavily uprated mk1 suspension into my mk2 after I blew the front shocks and he said no way. Even though the mk1 and mk2 are more closely related than the seat and mk1.

Yeah I got a good set of bilsteins in the end for my Mk1
Was taking a Mk2 apart today and the front shocks and springs are the same as the Seat ones.

Question 1...How do you tell if your Mk1 struts are the cartridge-insert type (ones that don't have to have the strut removed to replace them) or the difficult ones?
Question 2... Can you get bent struts straightened?
All mk1 have removeable inserts.
No you can't straighten them.
Suspension is VERY important part of a car and for safety sake one should always use good parts.
SEAT and any other later Golf struts may look the same but the shocker insert is a lot longer.
