Trial Schmiall... you'll just be driving straight back to buy it anyway
Hi All
I'm getting the trial APR Installed on Saturday morning, just had a few questions
(have read over hundreds of threads but haven't seen one in ages)
I'm aware that the system reverts back to "stock mapping" but is it actually the stock map or APR's verison of the stock map? If APR, do they tinker with it in any way?
Does it also disable the on/off stalk functionality of the program when it changes over?
Am due to get my car serviced in a couple of months, when i purchase the upgrade, cant the dealer simply just hold the stalk down to see if the system is present?
Am aware they probably don't go looking for it unless they find a reason to, but have always been curious about this.
Anything else worth noting?
Thx fellas, very excited that im finally popping its cherry

Hahaha I figured I would as many have raved about it...
It doesn't go back to the stock map, it goes back to an APR stock map.
I had problems getting my GIAC done as the previous owner had done the APR trial. My ECU had to be restored back to factory settings (a big drama getting the factory settings file from VW), and then the GIAC could be applied.
The dealer will be able to tell if the tune is on there even if you have an APR tune and you've set it (via the stalk controls) back to the 'stock' tune (which is just an APR interpretation of the stock tune). The VW diagnostics will pick up that your ECU is corrupted if they decide to look at it while at the dealership.
That said, they can only void warranty on something if they can find that the modification was the cause of the problem. Many of us never had a problem with warranty work on our cars when they had tunes.
IMO, just buy the tune you want... or ask someone here to take you for a ride in their tuned car before making your mind up as the APR trial is a pain if you choose another brand (and why wouldn't you, 21.5psi from the GIAC tune and 17-18psi from the APR... it was an easy choice for me )

Please see this post from Arin @ APR from a week or so ago on this same topic.
It is in contrary to what break has said above.
If you're concerned that APR is telling fibs, then consult this thread on an international forum and look at the posts from Chris@RT (RT being Revo Technik, a competitor for APR and GIAC). Chris too notes that the "stock map" is stock but there is (obviously) still APR information left so that you can reactive the APR tune via entering a code. Chris also notes that Revo can write over a APR tune (or trial) and vice versa. They just can't read each other's encrypted information (again, hopefulyl for obvious reasons). This is why devices such as Bluefin can fail after a trial or tune has been applied (regardless of who's it is).
I'm not sure why Break had an issue with GIAC writing over the APR tune, as from what I had read, GIAC's flash procedure was the same as APR and Revos...

Could have been the tuner I got to do my GIAC, from what I understand most Brisbane people get their GIAC tunes at a different location.
Either way, I'm just reiterating what they told me... but if there is an APR/REVO person on the forums I'd be paying attention to that as it's from the horses mouth.

Thanks for clearing that up, I read Arins post earlier this arvo,The trial now appears to be a pain in the ass lol may as well go the full deal, still got 7 days if i don't like it (prob wont happen)
Best get it right the first time
All the available chips appear to be pretty much the same in terms of the power you feel at the pants, GIAC has a nice little edge over the rest, but my car will spend most of its life commuting to and from work, odd track day when i get around to it and just cruising
APR is a decent choice for that no?
All of the tunes on the market will keep your car smooth and drivable around town. Obviously as full throttle there will be some differences as different tuners have different mentalities when it comes to achieving an "optimum" setup.
Lots of options out there; ya just gotta know where to look and what to ask. Most tuners will have a trial regime of some kind. What car is it you have?
