Fuel injector cleaner for petrol engine?

Someone recently advised me to use injector cleaner mixed in the petrol tank every few weeks or months. Does anyone have advice whether this is a good idea for a petrol V6? If yes, how often? And is any brand OK or just genuine VW/Audi product? There's a small metal can from Audi for around $40 which is said to be no different to the Holden plastic bottle for around $8. Then there's all the aftermarket ones such as Nulon, Wynn's etc. Thanks.
