A few K04 turbo related questions

First off - I'm planning to fit a K04 to a AWT engine (Passat B5 20V engine) once it's mounted in my MK1 the right way round. Now because I have a longitudinal engine that I'm mounting transversely - do I need a K04 originally from a longitudinal engine - i.e. K04-015 or can I go with the S3 turbo - K03-023? And will I need any different associated parts that I wouldn't if I had for example an AGU engine?

Secondly - I found FTG Motorsport through ebay - they seem to do cheap K04s - does anyone know how they sell them so cheap? Are they rebuilt China K04s or are these legit refurbished units? ftgmotorsports | eBay

I had originally looked at getting a used K04-023 from the UK for about $300-400 but I can get a 'new' ones from these guys for that with probably less risk compared to turbo that's been used for like 100,000kms. They also have RS6 hybrids and Billet options - I'm really only after 240-250WHP - should I just go for the standard K04?

Thanks in advance for the help!

I'd ask them about the pedigree of the turbos mate. I would probably not go with the S3/tt item, unless you can find someone has done one before. I am just thinking the downpipe might be a drama.

If it were me, I'd fit a K03s and it will be plenty fast enough. Pity you don't have one.....

If you get a K04, you'll need injectors, a MAF housing, S3/uprated fuel pump and it add to the costs a fair bit.

I fitted the S3/TT manifold and K04 on my Caddy and it works fine,at least for the last 10 years.

Was your 1.8 originally longitudinal? i.e. AEB, AWT etc

The heads are essentially the same, you will want a transverse sump and oil pump pick up though. Got both if you need them down the line.

I knew I should've bought a transverse engine! All the talk of them being easier to mount up, you just have to swap a few parts - never as easy as it sounds I'll get back to you on that Gav - I'll look into shallow sumps, alloy etc first and see if there's money in the budget to get an upgrade over stock. The oil pump pick up I'll probably need.

Edit - something like this maybe - 403 Forbidden - more clearance and reinforced

IIRC its the AEB motor that's easy to install, all the rest are 06A blocks with different mount points. There's the TDI hybrid sump that's part steel. Or Forge for one with baffles.

You'll need an inlet manifold as well I reckon. I can probably get one off and AGU for you.

If this thing doesn't mount straight up I'm selling it and buying an AGU - that's the only reason I have a longitudinal engine - ahhh well - should know within a few weeks, that's when I'm going to test mount it anyway!

Yes, mine started as an AEB block and they are the easiest to mount in a Golf 1.
