Downpipe fitting without tune. Mk6 Golf R

    Fitting 42DD Downpipe without tune...

So just picked myself up a 42DD Downpipe and was wondering if fitting it without getting a tune done will be ok for a couple of months...

Do I run the risk of running too lean/rich or getting any pinging etc?

You shouldn't be running it without a retune. So you should take it in to get tuned as soon as you fit it to your car.

Out of curiosity where and how much did you pick the Downpipe up for?

It won't run lean but you should have it tuned asap really. There's every likelihood that the cat efficiency code will be thrown and that will prevent you from seeing any subsequent faults being registered if you drive around with the MIL on.

I recently fitted one up to my Tiguan & it doesn't fit too well... Have a mate with an R that had similar problems. Have had it back to the shop once so far for a bit of trying to get it to not vibrate against anything that is too close to, & it will have to go in again for a bit more...

I've done around 500k's without getting a stage 2 tune file loaded, with no CEL/error codes & the car seems to be running perfectly (apart from the odd vibration from the pipe hitting heat shields at certain RPM & load). Have attempted to contact my local tune guy twice (phone & email) & he has failed to get back to me, so i will take my business elsewhere... Would like to get the vibration issue sorted first in case i need to just revert back to the stock DP...

(edit) I do however currently have a stage 1 tune, so that may be the difference.

Billy, did you buy your pipe new? I kind of feel 42DD needs to stop selling these until resolved.

Cheers guys. I bought it used from a forum advertiser in Sydney. He had it fitted to his Golf R and only suggested upgrading the mount as the factory mount rubbers failed on his not too long after running it. Other than that, he said it's fine.

Paid $580 in Sydney. Used from forum seller. Ceramic coated, resonated and with O2 sensor spacer/mount which supposedly eliminated CEL coming on.

The O2 sensor bung is a bad idea I really don't like them at all and you'd be safer to run it without one actually, it will show up in your trims too. Still if its only an interim thing it should still be OK. Running the dump without a tune isn't a problem either as the ECU will adapt anyway you just won't see any benefit from the hardware that's all.
I code out any O2 sensitivity issues in even our most basic tune.
