building a 2L 8v for turbo?

u need to remember you can spend little money in achieving 8v turbo setup IF you know how to do things... i.e install, plumping, welding... and so on...

if you do NOT know these things or anyone close to you who does!! you can be up for big dollars....

i think i could make a 2k 8v turbo setup if i wanted to

all i would need is...

turbo manifold $800 or near
turbo and cooler 2nd hand $500-800 T03 of some sort running no more that 14-15psi and a mitsu evo cooler
piping and fittings $2-300

then there are costs u can avoid like welding a oil pickup line to the sump

welding pipes and mounting a cooler, installing turbo and just painting and finishing off

josh can do most of these things, and he is an apprentice fitter and tuner atm, so he has access to a whole bunch of stuff. I still want to know what he's planning??

you could spend a whole lot more on other fancy things, but the ECU and tuning is what'll cost ya the most I think, dyno time and stuff.. and you still need to upgrade the box and stoppers...

U THINK 5K will be enough for a 20v turbo conversion in a mk1!!!

try double that.... then add on all the nessecities you need to stop then turn and so on...

I didnt say 5k would be enough for a 20V turbo but if u list up the prices of converting the 8v assuming u cant weld and have to source most of the parts, the cost of building up the motor like forgies, piping, injectors, head rebuild, standalone, etc etc it is cheaper to go 20V. THEN u add ontop brakes, engineering, service items, rego.

well one of my previous threads was about putting a VR6 engine into my Polo, however as my Polo is a '97 and alot of VR6's are older i could no do the transplant as its illegal to put an older engine into a newer car.

however, the 2L 8v out of the mk3 Golf is common and reasonably priced, i can do alot of the welding and fabrication myself and with the help of people at work, i could also get a turbo cheaper than what you would pay retail....

all i would like to know is how to get around 140kw's at the flywheel and what i'd need.... or as much power reliably without having to do the whole strengthening internals/blowing gearbox business. Also as its a Polo im wondering if the mk3 Golf ECU will plug straight into my Polo's Loom, thus minimising the work involved in the changeover.

cheers for all the replies fellas, some great ideas coming up here. I dont want to do a 20vT as its just too expensive really, and with the mk3 im hoping that the ecu will plug in hence i do not have to buggerise around with (and fork out stupid amounts of money for!) aftermarket ECU

the exhaust is not a problem, i think i can get the materials cheap and build it at work

Yeah your right rabbit, as long as you have degree of expertise and a friend to help, this 8v turbo project can become very good value for money, otherwise... just save for a faster car... or an engine swap. As it most likely won't be worth the 4-5k + a mechanic would charge...

Just go to the vortex 8v section... there are a fair few 8v turbo builds there, usually done with second hand Mercedes turbo's, DIY manifolds and anything else of use from the VAG parts bin! Fantastic reading!

i wouldnt have any troubles fabbing up a DIY turbo manifold really alot of the stuff i can do myself and i know lots of mechanically minded people so it shouldnt too bad! i'd never pay a mechanic for something i can do myself!
