bit of a noob, need halp please

hey guys and girls, im going to be picking up a mk1 golf very soon, its a rolling shell but im getting a 1.6l manual with it, as im planning a rather extensive build for the little car im going to fix up the motor since its outta the car, buuuut... iv never really tackled anything like this before and i dont know a great deal about volkswagens... now, i just want to freshen up the motor really, new seals and gaskets, new mounts for the engine and gearbox etc and add a few little performance bits like headers, timing pulley and so on, oh and also the gearbox, anyways, iv come across a sight called blackforest industries who have an extensive selection of parts for the mk1 but i dont really have a clue what fits the engine and gearbox (im interested in buying the smartshift linkage kit and shortshifter) anyways, i was hoping maybe some one could have a look on the blackforestind site and tall me whats compatable with the engine and gearbox combo ill have, or tell me what engine it is, i dunno if its a 8v or a 16v so i know what to keep my eye out for , im starting to get a bit confused confused haha :/
MKI - thats the link to the mk1 section
    any help is greatly appreciated
    cheers,
    tom

Hi, Tim of dubaddition sell Black Forest parts over here.

It'll be an 8V. Search for KR, 9A and ABF in google to see 16valvers.

Do you know there's stuff that needs doing on the motor? I'd fit it and run it first. Be shame to tear it down and then find there was nothing wrong with it. You would have spent time and money for nothing. Fitting and running it would just cost you time. Plus you can drop one of those motors in an afternoon easy.

With practice you can swap motor's out and back in in the same time.

I'd spend money on a bigger motor over, headers and vernier pulleys. I am over 40 though...... and have got over MK1s

theres nothing "wrong" with the motor as far as i know, but its already out of the car and apart from having the reassurance in my mind that motors good to go it would also be a good chance for me to learn about the motor, how to pull it apart, fix and replace things etc, that and it will be easier to work on out of the car... the cars gonna be a weekend cruiser/mild show build, not a 1/4 mile or time attack weapon so the ss headers and pulleys etc are gonna be for looks above anything else, any performance gains they might give are a bonus,
    thanks for your help,
    tom
