Finally, a post worth sending a reply to
I would not hurry to collect some cams until I had ported the head. You will lose too much torque otherwise, especially in the stock 1.8 motor.
You also need to have an experienced person to set up the carbs, othwerwise you are better off blowing through the inlet ports with a straw.
The best quality 16v camshafts are made by Schrick, DBilas Dynamic and VW Motorsport. The cheapest of the three are the DBilas ones and they also have a very large range. If you cannot afford headwork (around €620 with me on standard valves - what is the exchange rate to Australie?), I would use a split DBilas set of 266/272 degrees. Be sure to consider valve lift, especially on the lower duration camshafts (as it often is tall, meaning they will perform much the same on the road as a long duration, low lift cam).
If you wish to run the Schrick cams with a stock head, stay at 260/268 split or at best 268/268 (both of 11.5mm lift).
The VWM cams are ones I have seen the quality of but used only once in 310/305 degrees, which is suitable for a race car only!! So cannot offer you much help here as I don't remember their offered specs. You may find most are at least 280 degrees... which is fine if you have a bored 1.9 16v rebuilt with 11.5:1 compression
If you are to get the headwork done, you should do it at the same time as purchasing the cams (obviously you must know to what level you are to modify the head. Most experienced porters with this 16v head will offer 5 stages: The first in essence a clean up of the cast and recut valve seats and light reshape of mainly the exhaust port. The fifth stage is €2900 by me and involves titanium retainers, valvesprings, arrow solid lifters, extensive porting on both sides, raked valve seats with oversize Schrick valves and an angle cut for 14:1 compression piston clearance etc etc) . A true head porter will match the cams to machining work and provide you with proper flow figures before and after. If they cannot do this, look elsewhere.
If you stay on standard valves, yet have the head well ported (it will flow very well up to 7,800 on stock valves), with 5 angle valves etc (this is usually stage 3 - only difference from stage 2 is really 2 extra cuts on the seats over the factory 3 cut, which is often beaten and damaged), you CANNOT go better than Schrick 268/276 cams or Dbilas 272 (11.4mm lift model) and 280 on the exhaust side. This makes for a fabulous "sport" grade motor on 45 carbs. You can see around 180-190ps in this specification, with torque losses only below 2,800rpm. Peak power on the Dbilas set is around 7,200rpm - a little lower on the schrick set.
Though, remember to consider other things such as the stock valve springs and rod bolts are only suited to 7,500rpm, but this is another issue for another time!
thanks you sir,i have seen and heard about your work.thanks alot.the head will be going for a port and polish and matching but nothing crazy probably like a stage 3ish.
can you source a set of these cams and at what sort of price????
I can source all these cams, including the VWMS ones - if you are interested in these, however, I'll need to check up on the specs (some will be discontinued by now also)...
I can sell the Dbilas cams from around €550 under 280deg, 284deg + is upwards of €600 (I think €600 is around $1000 Australian dollars?).
The Schrick products cost 10-15% more, mainly because they are a larger company. The quality is much the same. I understand these are available locally in Australia. The dealer book lists "Quattro Sport Zentrum" of Victoria. I can no doubt do a better price than them, however, it may not be so good after postal and import tax costs. You can send me a message after you have prices and I can negotiate with you
You can also try Kent Cams, but their range is very small and I don't especially like any of their grinds Piper, Crespo, Newman, Neuspeed and all the rest are ok, but I wouldn't put them on a customer's car after seeing the quality of the three others I listed. The amount of grinds offered is also an indication of how much research and development has been put into the product. Many of the cheaper brands copy eachother and the most popular grinds of Schrick and so on. I have also found in the past upon measuring some cheaper cams that the claimed specs are out by several degrees :!:
just searched this ancient thread, BUMP!!!!
anyone elce has input?
chasing a nice set of wild cams myself

Hmnn maybe they had just started recording values for posts, maybe they were a mod at some point and the counter system only applied for actual users not administrators. I've seen that before in a system but it is a bit strange to say the least...
Also consider how shrewd a seller he is, deleted account perhaps and the message count attribute is stored with the user is now gone hence the "n/a" null value
Thats my guess anyway
