    Windscreen Replacement

So I was driving on the Pacific Motorway yesterday, when I got a stone chip that cracked my windscreen. Has anyone had a windscreen replacement done and if so do you have any recommendations?

I'm feeling a bit nervous about a botched job being done, after reading of other peoples bad experiences with poor quality replacements and other issues.

Also I came across a post on an American forum of a guy who reckons that the windscreens on the MK7 are made from the most brittle glass known to man. He used to own an E55 and reckoned that the windscreen on that was more or less indestructible. Having owned one myself for a few years, including driving across the Nullarbor and Europe with plenty of stones hitting the windscreen, I didn't get any cracks appearing during that time, so would tend to agree.

In VIC we have Windscreens O’brien. Used them for a MkV windscreen and was totally happy.

Do you have windscreen cover on your insurance policy?

I had the windscreen replaced on my Wolfsburg R wagon.
    Replaced by Shannons under insurance.
Screen replaced by Windscreens O'Brien then recalibrated for lane guidance and active cruise by Lennock in Canberra.
I am astonished as I can't see a difference from original.

I had one in mine earlier in the year - first one ever 🙏
Insist on OEM replacement glass and it will be perfect. You may have a bit of a battle but if you say it has auto wipers etc they will probably accept it. I had windscreen cover in my insurance so cost nothing and was a perfect repair. They even replaced the eTag holder!

I smashed my screen with a chip about 20 months ago. O’Briens replaced it with a like-for-like screen. It’s been perfect with no issues or problems, even copping a few more little chips along the way with no issues.

Unfortunately I’m not covered by my insurance unless I pay the excess. So I’ll probably go aftermarket. I could pay the excess and get OEM but then that will probably affect my no claims.

Yes. I forgot to mention. Only use a genuine screen.

Yep, unless you can pin it on an oncoming car.

I always try to go OEM, especially for rain sense and lane guidance. Going aftermarket I had one shield that never broke never felt smooth, was always kinda sticky even with good Bosch wipers. Another that seemed to have a permanent finger print and another that was perfect.

Last one the insurance company insisted it would be aftermarket, but said I could pay the difference for OEM, but when I took it in, the shop said nonsense and just put through the whole amount for the OEM and it was accepted. So was pretty happy about that. Smooth sailing since then now the roadworks have mostly finished around here.

Speaking with O'Brien's they can supply and fit an OEM windscreen but they reckon the only difference between the OEM and aftermarket, is that the aftermarket doesn't have the VW stamp on it. It's acoustic, encapsulated, has the sensors etc.

Yep, that’s what they told me when I had my screen replaced. I had to wait 48hrs for them to get one in as my local shop didn’t carry it in stock.
