Wheel hop / Axle Tramp

Hi Folks,

With my new GTI Performance I'm getting this thumping sound everytime I do a sudden accelaration and the dealership mechanic said that is normal, the sound is coming from the wheel hopping. I tried launch control too with the mechanic and it was the same for few seconds before it disappeared.

Has anyone noticed this..? any idea as to why it is wheel hopping rather than spinning..

Wonder if any other Golfers have this issue - if so they can help.

It's not just a characteristic of your golf but particularly evident on powerful fwd cars .. stiffer engine mounts "can" fix this as will better bushings, but you'll be affected by more vibration and noise which you may or may not like! Uprated engine mount sorted out the wheelhop issues on my focus st.

Doubt you have issues with your shocks as it's a new car.

I've experienced the exact same thing on my GTI PP.

In saying that I never experienced 'wheel hop' on my Polo GTI, rather wheel spin.

I recently upgraded my tyres to the Michelin Pilot Super Sports which appeared to fix the issue momentarily but has now returned after a few weeks...

My thinking is the same, this is a problem with tyres. I have Pirelli Pzero and don't think I want to invest in another set of tyres this soon.

It's a problem with your right foot. Excessive throttle application is causing wheelspin, then the traction control kicks in.

Try it without traction control - don't cry if you spear off the road.

Also have a fiddle with tyre pressures - anywhere between 32psi-40psi

You'll reduce it with better tyres, lighter wheels, lighter lower control arms, stiffer bushes, etc - though mainly it's a foot calibration issue

Here's a nice explanation on why it happens. Wheel hop is the result of wheel spin (or loss of tire traction) in FWD cars, they are not mutually exclusive.

Yes, it's mostly a right-foot problem, as others have said.

My Mk6 and Mk7 TDI's have both done it when I've had my heavy boots on — diesel torque makes them very prone to it, particularly crossing tram tracks or if the surface is rough.

My Mk5 GT Sport used to do this too. Learn to launch it with a lighter initial throttle application before stomping on the gas.

Talk to Dean at VW Central they sell a unit that may help 034 Racing make a unit that helps. Its not the tyres welcome to front wheel drive.
