What car did you have before your Mk7 Golf and how would you compare the two?

2011 Stage 2 WRX - Manual

Golf R is 2.5 weeks away so can only compare the test drive. The rex was....quick but in a brutal kind of way. The Golf is a little slower (0-100) but then again it was un-tuned. More refined, the DSG just gives a smooth power curve all the way. Although haven't driven it extensively as I'm getting older it's a better option for me.

Easier to park around the city and not so boy racer brash. Can't wait!

MK6 GTI
Before that, 91 Toyota Celica.

GTI is bloody fantastic build quality, ride and everything else compared to the Celica... Loved the flip lights on it though

Mk6 GTI stage 2 per sig --> Mazda CX5 GT --> Mk7 GTI Friday.

The mrs Polo turns into the GTI for me, and I hand over the CX5 GT to her for family duties.

I haven't err actually driven the Mk7 yet so my first comparison comes on Friday. It will be interesting to see how it feels compared to the tuned Mk6 which had more power but probably not dissimilar torque.

I had the Mk5 Golf TDI 2.0 before the same version in the Mk7. I found the Mk5 a bit "punchier" off the line. In fact, some of the take-offs in that car felt that it skipped gears to rocket you into the next dimension. The Mk7 though doesn't feel so South African built too Pity about that door creak that seams to be cross-generation.

I had a 1990 Nissan R32 Skyline GTS-t for 10 years before I got my mk7 90tsi. Differences are the massive savings in petrol usage, and the golf is actually faster from 0-60kph. Golf is much more nimble too, and I really appreciate how discreet the car is

My car history goes like this:

1st Car: 1999 Toyota Corolla E110 in Maroon. The one with the bug eyed round headlights. It was my mum’s car originally, she bought it new, and I bought it off her in 2006 for a bargain $5,000. Only had 66k on the clock. Totally bog standard with 80-odd kilowatts, but I drove it like it had twice that! Despite being massively underpowered I loved it as most people love their first car. I sold it to my girlfriend in 2009 with about 115k on the clock and she promptly wrote it off. Broke my heart.



2nd Car: 2007 Holden Commodore VE Sportwagon in Red Hot. With the dinosaur-era 4 speed auto. Now this car had power. Only problem was the transmission didn’t know how to use it very well. This was a company car as I was a sales rep at the time. So this car was AWESOME because it was free. It drank fuel like nobody’s business (I used to average 13.5-14L/100km in the city). Picked it up from Melbourne with 55k on the clock and when I left the company in 2012 it had around 130k on the clock.



3rd Car: 2012 Volkswagen Polo 6R GTI DSG in Shadow Blue. Bought it when I left the rep job and realised I couldn’t afford a Mk6 Golf GTI. Bought for $26k (only 9 months old, with 15k on the clock) in December 2012 from a lady in Adelaide and had a great drive back to Sydney getting to know it. Very, very different from the previous car in both size and power. The Commodore had more power but the Polo was miles and miles quicker. Absolutely loved it... Until the oil consumption issues reared their ugly head at around 27,000km. This issue eventually got so annoying that I sold it with a heavy heart in Feb 2014 for $20k so took a bit of a loss but not too bad. It had around 43k on the clock by then. Stupidly put new wheels on it 3 months before I sold it so wasted a bit of money there but I did love the look for those 3 months!



4th Car: 2014 Volkswagen Golf Mk7 GTI DSG in Carbon Steel (current). My first brand new car. Bought new in March 2014 from VW Sutherland for $46k drive away. I was sold on the GTI philosophy after the Polo so the Golf was a natural progression. Absolutely loving this car. A cracking drive even in peak hour! The cabin is a lovely place to be. Had a little gremlin after a month of ownership where the acceleration was odd and the cruise control didn’t work, but a day in VW service at Sutherland had it fixed, a solenoid in one of the cylinders was faulty and promptly fixed. Have done only 3,500km so far but loving every minute and looking forward to taking a long road trip somewhere in it.

It's funny how attached we get to our cars. I'm already missing my Ralliart and it's only been 8 days

Was a really fun car to drive as a daily, handled like it was on rails and surprised a lot of people with it's sleeper power (180kw).
Fantastic all-weather vehicle, however in the end the rattles, bland interior and the weight the out of warranty TCSST put on my shoulders became too much so I decided it was time to let go.
Also it wasn't the best car to drive at low speeds and in traffic on cold mornings, the transmission just felt raw and jerky until it warmed up. Different story altogether though once you revved above 3.5k.

I guess the only cure for that will be hopping into my 7R in 2 weeks time!

I own this at the minute... Until August when my Golf7 comes. It's taking ages!!!! I've only owned two Polo's the latest having 70PS... So the Golf at 150PS should be awesome!
