Is that from a vw dealership?
A independent vw workshop may be able to bring the cost down
My golf diesel passed the 100 K mark early last year. The service schedule advises to replace the water pump at this time. The all up charge for replacement the pump and possibly timing belt was close to $1900. Is this in line with other people are paying. The cost of the replacement water pump was about 800- $900. Are there any cheaper alternative sources for water pump apart from a VW genuine part

If you do it at the same time as the belt, the additional costs are quite small.
Average price range from an independent is around $1200 for the whole lot. Heavily depends on exactly what parts are needed, as some have different pulley setups which can affect the total cost.
