and click on that link it is for PRE 2015 DISCOVER MEDIA and is 5GB.

Also some 2013 units had problems and required an update from the dealer.

That link is for units that HAVE to use a VW branded SD card and nothing else so if your card has a VW part no on it thats what you should do AFAIK. I could be wrong but if your car only has a small capacity card you wont be needing the 24GB map

@hillbilly this still doesn't work for me so I assume that it may require an update from the dealer. It just notes that there is no navigation database on the SD card so won't read it properly.

Does anyone have any idea on the update that may be required from the dealer of any other way of updating the database?

@hoskrunner: hmm...... it really all depends!!

The MIB units on the first release mk7s in Australia in 2013 were relatively rudimentary and in particular for the purpose of SANAV function, these units assumed that map updates would be undertaken by the dealer (using their ODIS tool)

DIY map updates on Australian mk7s came along after the first release cars and for this purpose the MIB needs a piece of software called "VW Mapcare"!

I'm guessing of course - but I suspect that your MIB (the infotainment "brains" that has the 2 x SD slots) is missing the Mapcare software. If this is the first time that you have tried a map update on your car via the DIY method - then this is almost certainly the reason for your problems.

Alas, Mapcare authorization is a dealer thing - but once installed, map updates should work.

Now, I'm not sure how much VW will charge for this software (normally any work at a dealer is costed at a price approaching the annual budget of a small African nation).

My understanding is that the minimum time for ODIS access is one hour and the current cost is around $220 (which is outrageous IMO)! It shouldn't take anywhere near 1 x hour to install Mapcare - but this is a case where the dealer has your family jewels firmly in their grip and it's only a matter of how much they squeeze !!

Please don't PM to ask questions about coding, or vehicle repairs. The better place to deal with these matters is on-line, in the forum proper. That way you get the benefit of the expertise of the wider forum! Thank you.

Let me know if they were helpful.

I have 1 2015 Mk7 R, which has Discover Media and a 8GB SD card that holds the maps and goes in the unit in the glovebox.

In the past I've been able to use the VW Discover Care app to upgrade the maps, but on that app at the moment the latest version is the 2020, which is 3.6GB for multi-region (Aust & NZ).

If you go to the VW Australia map website, there is a 2022 update available to download, but it covers many more countries and is 24GB.

So the only option is to try and replace the files for this region on the original SD card, which creates the risk of making that card no longer work.

I have been unsuccessful in making a clone of the VW SD card using either XCopy or the Aoemi drive cloning software, I'd be interested to know if anyone has managed that because it would allow me to install a bigger SD card.

Volkswagen uses SD cards with an unique CID (Card identification) register. The MIB unit reads this CID and will allow access to the SD card if the CID matches.
To use non Volkswagen SD cards you need to change the CID or flash your MIB unit.

Have a look at this youtube clip MIB2 navigation SD card CID Lock removal with MIB STD2 Toolbox - YouTube it will give you more information. Note they are talking about the MIB2, not the MIB1. You need to research further to see if it is applicable you whatever MIB unit you may have.

OK Maybe I have worked it out It seems they have put the weong map for discover Media for PRE 2015 Golf's

HOWEVER if you put a POLO in it will give you the map in reply 2 on here and will fit on your card

So Do this Go to portal Select POLO 2014/2017 and Discover Media and using Discover Care download the map onto the card. Not saying it will work but no reason why it wouldnt.

If however you have wiped your VW card you may be in a world of pain

Also if it works PLEASE POST A CONFIRMATION SO WE ALL KNOW

@Flipper Dog: Hi. Please don't take offense because none is intended - but as information to others that might be looking for the latest map update for their MIB1 SATNAV on a MY15 (or earlier) Golf - the map above doesn't work!!

Purely by happenstance, I recently had a MY15 Golf owner arrive here at my workshop with exactly this request. I remembered this post and I loaded the file expecting much appreciation and gratitude from the owner. Alas my expectations were highly exaggerated!!

So, after a bit of tinkering - here's what I found (note for emphasis: these observations relate solely to the SATNAV SSD cards on MIB1 in MY15, or earlier Golfs):
    • The file size for the SATNAV Maps must fit on the VW provided 8GB SSD card which has a security SID register as per @Flipper Dog post.
    • The root-directory structure of the SATNAV file must be like this (note: I found a 2018 version that also had the file P48_N60S3MIBS2_ROW_NT.md5 in the root-directory)
      • maps/markets (the original VW version uses "maps" (I think) and the update versions seem to use "markets")
      • DBinfo.txt (this file contains the version-information text that appears on the MIB screen)

    • not surprisingly, the "maps/markets" directory contains the regional data arranged in a number of discrete country-specific folders

I suspect that unless the update file contains this set-up, the MIB will not accept the new SATNAV version

Again, not intended as criticism, just information for those reading this thread in the future.

    Don

PS: if anyone has success in finding a post 2018 SATNAV version - please post details

As i said try the 2014/2017 POLO map which is only a bit over 5 gb as I have found that maps go across models and I have used Skoda maps in my VW models for years and at present have used a T cross as source
for our Kamiq Maps and if you try to delete any map areas it wont work Been there proved that.
