Euro Car Upgrades used to offer plug & play modules for Golf 7 Xenon Headlights retrofit. Now that we bought the G7 for RnD we have decided to fit it with the U-LED Xenon Headlights OEM plus Golf R LED Taillights also OEM. The job requires plugs replacement from 10 pin to 14 pin, some wiring for both Front & Back and coding of the CECM. As our G7 is just a basic model we had to replace the CECM to make them work properly as ours did not have Xenon coding.

You can see straight away that the quality of German made product is superior and that the lights will last you the lifetime of the car. The attention to detail Germans put on the headlights is quite amazing.

Check our photos which also include Full LED Passat B8 Headlight which are the only ones available in Australia as Volkswagen does not offer them.

Thanks, so just confirming $3k for full LED tail light option for the Wagon?

The link you provided earlier shows those parts as being genuine VW parts.

Does the same apply to the wagon? I didn't think there was any original LED tail lights for the wagon

hmm....... I'm aware that Euro Car Upgrades is a sponsor, but I still believe that there is an important question to be asked here. I investigated retrofitting genuine VW HID assemblies but was told in no-uncertain-terms by the parts manager at my local VW dealership that the exercise was illegal in Australia without also fitting a levelling mechanism and a washer system. Ultimately the ccosting for the all-up exercise became so expensive that I just walk-away from the project. I started to look at the ADR, but the section on what's necessary for HID fittings (not retrofitted Xenon lamps) is so arcane that I didn't bother reading all the material. Aussie web-sites talk about lost insurance coverage and personal liability for transgression of the lighting part of the ADR, so this was a serious consideration -for me

So here's the question: What is Euro Car Upgrade's view about the legality in Australia of retro-fitting HID assemblies without installing levelling devices and/or without headlight fitting washers - and the clincher-question is who bears the liability?

We have fitted them numerous times with washers and levelling system too. Yet, where clients chose to do it without accessories, there is never been any problem.
Roadside law enforcement do not have diagnostics Tools available to activate levelling or washers. Levelling does not come on every time you switch on the car and its mostly used when you tow a trailer or off road. Washers do not activate every time too and can be disabled completely. I got them disabled on my personal car as i hate them spraying on my clean bonnet and we don't get snow on the Sunshine Coast to be using them regularly.
Moreover there are plug & play Modules available for the Golf 7 headlights which allow for manual levelling and are perfectly legal.
HID are designed for off road use but genuine xenon headlights only use levelling and washers in extreme Situations. Without advanced diagnostics like ODIS its impossible to test it on the road. We just had a bump with our g7 and one retrofitted headlight got replaced under insurance no dramas. You can add xenon headlights to your insurance as well. A client with Audi A6 with Retrofitted Full LED Headlights had just had them replaced by Insurance after a bump too, $7000 a light, this is as he added them to the policy.
If someone wants to scare you they will, but reality is that people around the world have done it for many years without major hiccups.
As much risk as crossing the street. It will be more risky to use the China Mars lights as they look aftermarket and dont work correctly so a smart cop can actually smell a rat there. It would have to be a VW Fanatic. Laws in Europe are tougher and this does not stop people from adding these on. This is simply backed up by 300% improvement in the light output - width, length and brightness. You can't beat this major safety improvement with the lack of levelling or washers in a country where snow almost does not exist to be using washers. I would advise when towing heavy loads, to have the lights adjusted or invest in a manual levelling module which operates your xenon lights from the scroll like it would with halogen.

Of course, there are risks to be weighed up.

Yes, retrofitting HIDs without the full ballast/auto-levelling and washer system will technically render the car illegal. Although such an omission is unlikely to result in a defect (unless you're actually blinding oncoming traffic when the car is loaded up - which is actually the point of the ballasts/levellers in the first place), there's always the possibility of your insurance company finding out should you have an accident. Any modifications that render the car non-compliant can give an insurance company an opportunity to refuse a claim.
