very quiet rapid ticking sound when the car brakes itself

    Golf R 7.5 built Aug. 2018.

Three days ago my wife and I noticed a low volume rapid ticking sound when in Active Cruise mode when the car brakes came on to slow it behind a car ahead which is being tracked. It is most noticeable just as the car is coming to rest, then stops. A service department booker-innerer said "all Golf Rs and GTI's do it" but I am pretty certain it has only just started and my wife had not noticed it before . We do not notice it until we have gone about 5 km.

The sound seems to come from the cabin console according to my wife, or to me, from the steering column.

As it is associated with braking I am concerned but if it is indeed normal we could easily live with it.

These cars make lots of whirring noises from time to time is off, and not just the fans cooling..

I have a TSI, can confirm you hear a single tick (like a relay switching) when the brakes are activated under ACC. It’s definitely not a rapid ticking sound tho.

Sound is coming from the steering column area.

The only time I get rapid ticking sound is when the Front Assist activates and it jerks the brakes as a first warning before the full brake.

    Hope this helps?

    Thanks, it does help.
I notice a single tick just like you describe too so I'm guessing a relay activating something else that makes the rapid ticking. It sounds logical that there's Front Assist activated in the process when I hear it. I am just a little puzzled why we have only just noticed it but that may be explained by a resonance that is occurring now that our weather has cooled. We got the car last Dec 18th and it has been around 30C since then up until the first time we noticed it which was down at 23C. I'm relaxing about it now and thinking it is normal and it doesn't sound nasty as it is so quiet. I hope I get more feedback as yours is only a sample of one and statistically sus (

This is weird. We went for a 150 km drive today, temperature 25C, 35Km of stop-start traffic, log stretches of 80 to 100 Kmph and did not notice it once, although I was not trying to hear it. All I have done is washed it, raised the driver seat 3cm, slid it back 3cm, raised the steering wheel and pushed it in a little. I think we can drop the topic now.

I've noticed this rapid ticking when using ACC at low speeds(50kph) over slightly undulating roads.
I assumed it was the ABS pump or solenoids doing its thing to slow the car down to its set speed.

I have the relay clicking in Golf but not in Tiguan. The relay must be too close to the driver seat (or not well soundproofed) in Golf.
