I don't recommend anyone mess with this in their car, but if you are already comfortable with BCM adaptation (or DV52 if you have some time with your test bench) perhaps someone could indulge this theory. . .
Take an adaptation channel map of your BCM.
Modify 1 or more lighting related channels.
See if the contents of this lighting configuration channel change at all
If it does, restore it to the original value and see if it also restores the value of the other channels you changed.
kamold: I've had a love/hate relationship with light configuration channels since I first hooked-up my original VCDS cable to my my13 Golf - which was the first MQB build Golf. In the BCM for that vehicle, there were as many light configuration channels as there were Leutche channels: there were 35 x Leuchte-sets, so there were 665 of each type of channel. Further, each Leuchte channel appeared to have a twin light configuration channel. Moreover, the Leutche channel description had (and still has) a number (0-34) that links with its twin Lighting configuration channel.
As I said in my lighting explanation document :
Of the 35 x channel-sets in the BCM of my 103TSI, 10 x channels-sets are not active. Of the 25 channel-sets that are active, 6 x channels-sets appear to have a close correlation between the Leuchte channels and the Light configuration channels. The remaining 19 x "active" channel-sets do not appear to have this correlation.
The close correlation channels are: Low Beam Headlamp, Front Turn Indicator and Daytime Running Lamp (left and Right lamps in each case). The only linking aspect for these lights is that they are all part of the front headlight assembly albeit the High beam lamp is missing from the list. Whenever a stored valued of a Leutche channel is changed for these lamps, the corresponding stored value of the Lighting configuration channel automatically changes to the altered value.
At the time of writing, the purpose of the Lighting configuration channels is not known. However, my initial suspicion is that each Lighting Configuration channel-set records the set-up parameters for the power supply circuits of the exterior light that is defined in its twin Leuchte channel-set.
So, what seemed to occur on MY16 MQB cars is that the boffins @ VW re-wrote the ever increasing database in the BCM and eventually the complete transfer of the long-coding switches to adaptation channels (thus increasing the channel count even further). What also happened around this time is that the 665 x Light Configuration were coalesced into one channel with a 38 x hex code (often it's a zero string)

PS: thanks for the SMV clarification - perfectly correct!
