So this means, for safety reasons, you can program the two outer rear brake lights to come on to say 50%-100% intensity whenever the tailgate is open, regardless of the time of day. Improving visibility of the car
Agentthumb: Sounds like I have a new devotee for VWWatercooled's "Leuchte Programming" group (maybe even MRG_AU) !! Well done.

As you will quickly learn when you look at the 73 x permissible settings (there was 67, but I found 6 more in the latest RT software) for the alpha channels - there's lots of variations possible. The limit is entirely your imagination!!

    Cheers

Please don't PM to ask questions about coding, or vehicle repairs. The better place to deal with these matters is on-line, in the forum proper. That way you get the benefit of the expertise of the wider forum! Thank you.

Thanks Don! Couldn't have done it without your research and guidance.

Very often you own a car, and you think, gee it'd be nice if it did this when x happens. Now I actually can make it happen

Not sure what Leutche programming you did as part of the project and I don't have in my database a listing of the BCM admaps for a Aussie GTI, but I did manage to find one for an NAR GTI (which I hope is similar).

So, I've posted below the two Leuchte channel-sets for the tail light assembly on the right side of the car for an Aussie Golf R and for the NAR GTI. In this case, I have shown the inner and outer lights on the assembly. The same configuration will apply on the left side of the car and the pertinent adaptation channels will have the following descriptors:
    1. Left side outer light = Leuchte23SL HLC10
    2. Left side inner light = Leuchte20BR LA71

To help with your understanding of the table (and others who might be interested) , I've used the same format in the table as in my reply to agentthumb's DRL question

Two immediate observations are clear from a comparison of the two model cars:

First, it's obvious that the illumination level for the parking light function on the outer tail light on the Golf R is much lower than in the GTI. As shown in (10)-Leuchte21BR RC8-Dimmwert CD 21, the Golf R has an illumination level of 10, whereas the GTI has a value of 28. This difference confirms your observations as per your post. Have a look at the setting in this adaptation channel on your car

But second, what's also clear is that the Golf R uses the inner tail light as a Brake light in addition to a parking light whereas the GTI doesn't have this extra feature. The inner tail light on a Golf R is also involved in the turn signal activity as shown in Bank 3. Not sure how your inner tail light is configured, but it might also be worth looking at how this Leuchte channel-set is programmed in your car. If you don't want to reconfigure the inner light, then I suggest that you at least alter the setting in (6)-Leuchte24SL HRA65-Dimmwert AB 24 to 10 to balance the two parking lights. Good luck and please provide feedback on your changes - so we can all learn from your efforts

    Cheers
    Don

PS: Given the sudden interest in things Leuchte-like, I've updated my paper. I've been amassing additional information that I've just been keeping in different places. Decided to add the Leuchte stuff to my paper- hope it makes sense to all
    Hi Don!

Thanks for the info. Everything has worked except for one small thing . . . and it doesn't seem to be changing! All I needed was for the parking lights values to be changed to 10 on all 4 pieces (left assemble x2 and right assembly x2)

The right side tail lights have been dimmed from value "28" down to "10". Now they were:
    Outter: (10) Leuchte 21BR RC8 -Dimmwert CD21
    Inner: (6) Leuchte 24SL HRA65 -Dimmwert AB24

The left side tail lights have been dimmed from value "28" down to "10". Now they were:
    Outter: (10) Leuchte 23SL HLC10 -Dimmwert
    Inner: (6) Leuchte 20BR LA71 -Dimmwert

The issue I'm having is all the lights have been "dimmed" to 10, from 28, except for the inner left! For some reason your table had the value at 100 for the Aus Golf R for the inner lights, so I made them 100. Then further down you mentioned to change them to "10" to balance the parking lights.

I amended this with the right side, (noticing straight away the inners were much brighter than the outers) but the left is staying at 100.

    I have found the issue!!!

The value for the BRAKE light on the inner lights must be 10, not 100. When the brake peddle is depressed only the outer lights are supposed to illuminate (from factory - however - there is a tweak to make them all illuminate).

@Jazrod, it's good you brought this up. I can't figure out why the factory has set the brake lights up like this. One would think more lights when braking to alert traffic behind would be better. I have also noticed the same behaviour in other cars with 2 brake lights each side. Only the outer lights seem to increase intensity when braking.

Does any forum member know if this is an ADR requirement? Or are there other reasons?

Jazrod: Sounds like you have figured it out anyway-well done!

I know it doesn't matter now, but my illumination number for the two inner lights for (6)-Leuchte20BR LA71-Dimmwert AB 20 and for (6) Leuchte 24SL HRA65 -Dimmwert AB2 4 is correct for the Golf R (I rechecked the settings in my data base).

I suspect that your car has both the inner and outer lamps (on both sides) as stock-standard GTI set-up. That is, the settings on all four lights on your car are as shown in the extreme RHS column in my table. Since you never made any Leuchte changes to your car after you installed the Golf R fittings, why would the set-up be any different than stock standard GTI?

Hence why the value 10 is a appropriate for the illumination level on channels (6) on the inner lamp - because this lamp doesn't act as a Brake light on the GTI fitting (it just acts as a parking light). But this light does act as a Brake light on the Golf R fitting. In fact, the inner light on a Golf R acts as a brake light AND a parking Light AND as an indicator (depending on what switches are on and whether the brake pedal is depressed).

I haven't discussed here the matter of priority in the alpha channels, but there is a specified order whenever there is a conflict in a Leuchte-set. Here's an example in your project; when the brake pedal is depressed and the parking lights are switched-on how does the outer tail light decide what to do, given that it is programmed to operate as both brake and parker ? The answer is that there is a set priority level for the alpha characters - so it's quite OK to make a lamp do multiple functions. And it's also quite OK for multiple lights to perform the same function (i.e. both the inner and outer tail light on your car act as a parking light - the same function)

Here's an example of a modification of the tail lights on a NAR GTI (to a version of Golf R tail-lights) that a fellow forum colleague (JBale) managed to achieve through innovative use of Leuchte programming (note: this wouldn't be legal in Australia)

Of course, agentthumb's question about compliance with the ADR is an entirely different matter! I've tried to read the ADR and I have to say that its a pretty arcane document! But my rationale is that as long as the modification that is done is exactly the same as another car that has passed the ADR, then the tweak is compliant. So, for example, If I were to install Golf R taillights and I use Leuchte programming to make the new taillights operate as a Golf R, then I should be OK (I think).

The other question is: how many traffic law enforcement officers actually know the ADR to a level of accuracy that enables them to spot this type of breach - not many (if any) I would think! Though it's probably better not to get into this area of discussion if some-one is suing you after a car accident because it is claimed that your lights weren't compliant with the ADR!!

    Cheers
    Don

So.... Anyone in Melbourne fancy doing some VCDS treatment on my Golf 7 Highine wagon? Would love to get the rain auto close and the traffic working. Happy to pay.

    Thanks.

Video In Motion is explicitly not possible using VCDS - Ross-tech have openly stated they won't be permitting or supporting it.
