spuddee: Hi. First, I tend to agree with Eaglehawk - at least for the installation of the map-update facility that is a firmware upgrade to the MIB unit (the module that lives inside the glove-box). This firmware update (if it's needed) should be provided at no extra cost by your dealer. Certainly ask your dealer while he is updating the firmware, if he will throw-in an updated map too - but good luck with his response.
This said, a couple of responses to at least some of your questions:
Yes, the file that you downloaded must be unzipped before it is loaded onto an SD card. The downloaded file has a .7z file name extension which means that it is a compressed archive file created with 7-Zip open source software. Files are compressed to reduce their size and for ease of downloading.
I'm not sure which version of operating software that you are using on your computer (Windows 7, 10, XP - or even if you are using a Mac) but when you select the file, right-click with your mouse and see if one of the options is "extract information", or something similar. If you have the "extract" option, then follow the prompts for unzipping the file (take notice of the directory name where the unzipped file will be placed). If you don't have an unzip application, you will need to download the software from the web (something like WINZIP will suffice if you are using one of the later Windows operating system on your PC/laptop).
After you have unzipped the downloaded file (and you know where it is in your directory structure), you MUST use the original SD card from VW for the new maps - You can't use another (normal) SD card because there is special coding on the original VW SD card that the SATNAV firmware has to recognize.
So, just in case the update process goes pear-shape, save the original files from your VW SD card onto your PC/Laptop somewhere and note the directory location. Then delete the original files on your VW SD card - then copy and paste the new, unzipped map file(s) onto the VW SD card.

Please don't PM to ask questions about coding, or vehicle repairs. The better place to deal with these matters is on-line, in the forum proper. That way you get the benefit of the expertise of the wider forum! Thank you.
