Hi all, had my R for 2 years now and I have had a few issues
1) faulty window motors
2) leather tear drivers seat
3) broken window switch
4)sunroof shade broken clips
5) leaking coolant.
6) new gear knob leather pealing on top
VW Have been great, it's just been inconvenient.
The latest issue has been a rattle from the sunroof area, my last service they said they lubricated it but driving away it did not fix issue. When I tilt roof the rattling stops. Has anyone had this issue and if so what was the fix?
Okay will so thanks
I have my16 passat with sunroof rattle too. They put a lube but it doesn't fix the noise. What is the bulletin number?
They ended up replacing sunroof in my case.

As a sunroof fitter and specialist repair person for sunroofs I can add this bit of advice , firstly in some instances we see rattles as a major problem and as stated mainly when the roof is in its close position . There are a couple of things we find firstly if you modify your wheel tyre combination this can have detrimental affect on the way the car handles our poor roads , road bumps are transmitted upwards to the roof so the sunroof is always going to cop the shocks . Now because the roof is in the close position its mechanisms are at their most vunerable position so any bumps will cause the glass to bounce on its mechanisms causing wear which can end up as a rattle . Back to the wheel bit I get many calls out to fix rattles and when you arrive at the car you see those 19 or 20 inch wheels and rubber band tyres fitted , anyone can see that there is no real comfort or shock absorption going on . You can sometimes do mods to some sunroofs to fix it BUT its never going to be a long term fix if the wheels are culprit . The car may look tough but riding like a bucket of ****e is going to shake the crap out of any moving part .Sometimes the only fix for rattles which are caused by possible poor build quality of the sunroof is for the dealer to replace the whole unit as there are many moving parts which are not sold as individual parts . Lubricating is a standard fix for rattles by dealers , found that out with our last new T5 van front doors bounced against the stops on closing as the door seals were just crap . The old Golf TV add springs to mind salesman trying to sell a car and shutting the doors with the cry just like a Golf , in our van it was more like a Chinese Cherry car , oh wait that would be an insult to the Cherry . The dealer tried to fob me off with the old lubricant trick , I was quick to point out that as I had also been a motor trimmer for over 45 years the lube thing was a crock . New seals was the only answer along with realigning the doors .
Nice detailed response Sunny. Only issue I see with the wheel tyre combo being to blame is that 19s are standard fitment on many cars so surely it can't be that as a sole cause or they should either not offer 19 inch wheels or redesign the sunroof. Glad there is a TPI for the issue for those with a sunroof. Added weight and complexity I don't need so I prefer my cars without them anyway. To the OP I hope you can get it sorted - rattles are a pita
