My advice - save yourself the angst of guessing!! There's a much better and generally a lot more accurate method for identifying the cause of these sorts of problem; "use the force Luke" - or in this case, use the in-built, self-diagnostic facility that was designed exactly for this purpose.
Of course, you need access to a diagnostic device like VCDS, or OBDeleven
If you don't own such a device - this forum has a "pimping service" that connects consenting members (albeit, I'm not sure how many potentially "consenting members" live across-the-ditch). See link below:
