Sadly forced to scrap my 2013 Golf

    Hi Folks

I have been the proud and happy owner of a VW Golf auto hatch 2013 (Highline). That was until a month ago when the central computer informed me "no gear box".

We decided to repair him, and a new mechatronic unit was purchased from VW through my Service Center for $3500. Then it was discovered part of the tranmission was, essentially, in pieces.

OK. Let's repair that as well. Tyhe Service Center sourced a second hand transmission and one is available for purchase at a cost of $3500 (it has 141K on it).

The two parts with labour will come in around $9500.

We're not going to do it, and so are sadly scrapping the car. Does anyone have any advice on where I can sell a brand new in the box genuine VW mechatronic for a VW Golf? And does anyone have any advice about how to best scrap the vehicle?

Any other advice, like "wait a minute, you have other options" is welcome. But if other options cannnot beat $9500 then I am unlikely to be able to consider them.

    Thanks folks.

    Those pesky DSG 7-speed dry-clutch boxes ...

In order to give some advice, we do need to know a few things. What is the milage on the Golf? How good is its service history? Did you get the error codes on the car scanned (and if so, can you post that up)?

    Thanks, Sharkie.

Mileage is 155,000km. Every annual service was performed - mostly by VW but a few times by RACV Service.

Error codes - no, I don't have a copy of them. The vehicle was towed by RACV initially and they said "error codes indicate the mechatronic so we cannot help". It was towed to the indie service centre who agreed with that.

On the tranmission itself, they said no error codes ever get reported and it required visual check to see the issue.

What is an indie service center?

The bad news is that selling your car as scrap is not going to be lucrative ... At best you would get a few $1000 (less than 3) for the entire car. If you can strip it and sell parts you might get more combined but you would need space and time to do that. There are a few companies around the major cities that you can phone and they will give you price and tow the car. Again likely to be less than $3K.

Best bet if you do want to sell is to look for someone who can fix it to sell themselves later at profit. Might get a few $$$ more than $3K.

    Thanks again.

Indie service center = Independent service center. We use the largest place in our region - they deal with only European makes.

As an FYI, you could buy a whole scrapped Golf at a salvage auction (Pickles) with most likely a good workable gearbox. Get that out and into your car, figure at least $3K labour (which is quite rich) if through your indie, none if you do it yourself (I do this as a hobby), sell the car for market value (probably about $9K), sell what remains of the wrecked Golf and maybe make a small profit. Sell the new mechatronics (can you return to VW?) and you would likely be square but without a car. Lots of pain and drama though.

Best bet may still be to sell up now and cut your losses.

Hey, sorry to hear about that.

I had the same gearbox, and it lasted 360k km with two clutches and one mechatronic unit. Recently, a sensor in the mechatronic unit failed, and the gearbox was due for another clutch change. I was skeptical about fixing the mechatronic unit and installing a new clutch in such a high-mileage gearbox, so I decided to move on to something else.

To answer your question: as Sharkie mentioned, it depends on how well-maintained your Golf is and how much you like the car.

Which part of the transmission was in pieces?

You can find DQ200 gearboxes with low mileage for under 1k. I’ve seen plenty around here in Sydney and on eBay, often with a 3 or 6 month warranty included.

The quote of over 9k seems very excessive, I’d probably look for someone else to get it done.
Golf Wagon MK7 (90 92TSI) - Mods: DQ250 swap, 110TSI Turbo upgrade with Stage 2, Bilstein B12, Pretoria 19", GTI PP Sway bars upgrade F/R, Full GTI Tartan interior, GTI colour Cluster, R's Bi-Xenon with AFS retrofit, GTI brake upgrade.
    More to come...

Just wondering, would a DQ250 swap be cheaper then $9k?
