Radiator Fan Constantly On

New Mk7 Golf TDi with 1200km done. Radiator Fan is constantly on, even on start up in cold weather. Stays on after turning the engine off for up to 2 minutes. Any ideas ? Fluid levels are all fine. I do remember our old TDi Tiguan did it for a few months then stopped, no explanation. New Passat Alltrack TDi did it twice 2 months ago, hasn't done it since.

Have you got the aircon switched on?

They will come on after shutdown, if there's a rise in coolant temp detected.

Hi! I've got the same cars as you.

Yes, the Golf seems to keep the fan on for about 5 minutes after short trips (< 5 mins). Yet, on long trips, it doesn't. Not sure whether it's trying to cool something down, or warm something up?

I have the same car just under 3000 km and this has just started to happen with me, but only after some highway driving, not all. Air con not on ... But I was wonder it was the car burning the dust in filter during a big drive and the the car trying to cool things down ... The car smells very hot like some thing is burning, but the temp is spot on in the middle ...

Have a mark 6 gti as well and I think in two years this might happened twice but only when really hot not in a Melbourne winter...

Temp gauge is spot on, and yep it does smell hot - like its burning.
Wife has just driven to work tonight, "particulate filter" warning has just come on..might be a bad batch of BP ?

It will be the DPF doing it's routine DPF Regeneration. This is why you are all stating your car feels/smells very hot, because in reality it is, actually around 600+ degrees... It will happen more often after short drives as the Regen will attempt to be performed but then you turn the engine off so its interrupted and the car can no longer perform the regen but still will be hot so needs to cool down, the only way to do that is to leave the fans running for a little bit. You wont notice it so much on long drives (particularly al highway) because the regen will take place on the drive and then the engine will cool down over the long period of time, it all basically depends on at what point you turn your car off e.g. If you turn it off in the middle of a regen, when the car will be @ over 600 degrees.

I don't think it is the fuel as I don't use bp.

But if you are only doing short trips that light will come on which is saying do some highway so it can burn it off

It all basically depends on at what point you turn your car off e.g. If you turn it off in the middle of a regen, when the car will be @ over 600 degrees.

This explains it for me it seems. It's the middle of winter here, and a lot of my drives are short. Also explains why it happens sometimes and not others.
