I have noticed that when I am in race mode, or when i change from D mode to S mode, the car sounds louder and whilst driving it tends to take much longer to change gears. when I was going 80km, I was still stuck on S3 or S4.
1. is this normal?
2. I use comfort mode for daily driving in the city, but i was wondering what the use of the S mode or race mode was used for?
3. Also does it use more petrol when you are using the S mode?
4. Is it a bad idea to keep the mode in race mode always? is it bad for the engine?

It is the sport setting for the transmission - so yes it holds gears longer, and yes it will use more petrol.
By what you wrote it sounds like it is operating normally.
I would only use the sport setting for a trackday or my favourite piece of road when no when is around.
Once you select race mode the transmission will automatically engage sport mode for the transmission but you can just tap the shifter down once and the transmission will go back to normal mode while still giving you the race mode options (louder sound, heavier steering and stiffer suspension)
And yes as above, RTFM

Race is for racing (or track) and sport is sporty driving. It will thus hold gear and use more petrol. What's unexpected?
