On our 110TSI after 3 years and 3 months (3months out of warranty) and 27,000km, the waterpump started leaking at the housing. VWA, to their credit, covered everything (parts and labour) under a goodwill warranty claim. Still looking for a full metal replacement though.

Driving the Golf to VW for the waterpump replacement reminded me how bad the clutch was getting. So I ordered a Sachs Performance clutch from Germany for it. Sachs has a division that makes clutches that can handle more torque (20%) than stock on special order. $800 delivered and it will ship once its finished being built.

I will take the old 1 to a special clutch place in Brisbane who build (rebuild) high performance clutches using the originals to your specifications. I will ask for a 350NM clutch to be built and the reason I'm doing it this way around, is due to the fact I'm not allowed to have the Golf out of service for more than a day at a time (the time it takes to actually replace the clutch) and having a custom clutch built takes 4-5 days. I'll keep the custom clutch for stg 2 ....

    No issues being tuned?

My water pump is also leaking 3 months out of warranty, waiting on the goodwill claim now

Luckily no .... though I suspect that depends on the dealer. The service guys were very interested in the TSI as it was the only 1 they have ever seen "enhanced" to such an extent and we had a decent chat about it all. They service my R too (it has a service plan) and although no engine mods (as in ECU, but it does have a full intake from the muffler delete forward + cat back + RSWB) and never said a thing about that either. The car was clean and obviously well maintained with a FSH too.

I just said it was not unreasonable to expect that a waterpump should last for more then 27,000km (and 3 years) .... that it was a well documented known issue with the Golfs .... and made sure they noted that down on the report to VWA

Finally going in for the clutch replacement in a week's time. It held out pretty well all things considered giving at least 30,000km on a stock clutch and 70+NM above oem "spec". Sachs performance clutch with a stock new flywheel going in. I'll keep what comes out and see if the flywheel can be machined for future re-use and the clutch will go to a specialist to do a 350NM+ custom build.

Other than the clutch and the waterpump, it has been a trouble-free 5.5 years of ownership with 4.5 of those years in tuned mode.

Incidentally, I found a downpipe in Europe made for the 1.4TSI as well as a hybrid turbo upgrade. These will require a custom tune and I don't believe there is anybody that can do that really well for a 1.4TSI in Aus.

    Hey Sharkie,

I got my downpipe from AliExpress and it's great and it's a fraction of the price. Very well made and real stainless steel.

The hybrid turbo that you're talking about is from RTMG? If so, they are hit and miss... I know a couple people around in Sydney that are very unhappy with it, main complaints are about the poor performance, wastegate, turbo house moving and other things. Not even mentioning that it has only a couple people here in Sydney that are up for the challenge to tune them.

Related to your new clutch, are you getting the SACHS performance one or you managed to get some to do a custom made? I might be interested (and at least another two people) if they can do it on a dq200 as well.

Golf Wagon MK7 (90 92TSI) - Mods: DQ250 swap (Stage 2), 110TSI turbo upgrade (Stage 2), Bilstein B12, 19" Pretoria, GTI PP sway bar upgrades (front/rear), full GTI tartan interior, GTI color cluster, R Bi-Xenon headlights with AFS retrofit, GTI brake upgrade.
    More to come...

At this point I think after the clutch this project is done. Rather spend any future funds on another car to be honest. The TSI is a daily for my daughter so it cannot be off the road too long. As such, the SACHS clutch is going in along with a new OEM flywheel. The original flywheel (given its only done 38,000km) could very likely be machined and reused but we can't take the chance it cannot and be off the road for a while to get a new flywheel shipped in. This way once the car is back and running we can do future prep for another change at some point.

Will likely keep the TSI in the family for a long time, although my daughter is making noise about wanting a 7.5 R ...

Hi, and sorry for post resurrection, thread has been interesting for me as I own a 92kw Golf mk7 manual that I am planning on tuning.

I am however confused about your first post where you say this is a 110kw manual golf, as far as I was aware there wasn't ever a 110kw manual in Australia, the 110kw all came with the stronger auto box as the manual gearbox torque limit is exceeded with 110kw.

    Or am I mistaken?

Mistaken mate. The 110TSI was in all the MK7.5 Golfs and came in a manual in the base model MY18 onwards and the Trendline MY18 onwards. MQ250 on the manuals are rated at 250NM.

Stronger real auto boxes only on MK8 Golfs. All TSI Mk7/7.5 auto Golfs have the DQ200 DSG.
