Oil Consumption 2.0 TSI

This may be a silly question but I regularly read threads about high oil consumption issues in 2.0 TSI turbo petrol and VW even say to expect it.

My engine has done just under 5000kms and the dipstick shows almost no observal reduction of oil since new. This is both cold and after 5mins after being at full temps. I still cannot see any cross hatched part of dipstick, and doesn't appear overfilled either.

Are there any GTI/TSI owners who have experienced relatively low oil usage? Just a note, I have Octavia RS mk3 but interested to see GTIs which are more common and share same engine.

The car does about 100kms a day on highway by a very careful (I.e. Slow driver) during the week and I'll usually give a spirited drive once a week. I tried to vary engine speeds during first 1000kms but also took it through entire range of engine speed as well.

My EA888 requires no oil top-ups between 7500km service intervals.

Some like a drink & some abstain.

The old mk4s would drink so much oil it was ridiculous . Every other VW I've owned never required oil between oil changes.

My mk7 GTI has 13k Kms on it and has not needed a top up. Just had a service and Penrite oil put in.

I've been watching mine since new due to the warning I received from the dealer when I picked it up. It now has 1600km on it and hasn't dropped any visible amount on the dipstick at all. I drove it sedately and didn't rev it above 4k for the first 1500km as per the owners manual and I am wondering if this the key to owning an engine that doesn't use oil?

Mine doesn't use oil but I drove quite "vigorously" from the day i picked it up as I believe that if you run them in slow they will be slow forever.

I think it's just a crap shoot and how it's run-in isn't part of the equation

Brad is quite right — it's a crap shoot.

Engine (and all other) machined parts have upper and lower sizing tolerances, and how well they fit together depends on part selection during assembly.

An engine with parts properly matched (particularly bores, pistons, rings and bearings) will obviously allow less oil into the combustion area than the reverse situation — it will also be tighter and need more careful running in.

Having said that, there's no such animal as an internal combustion engine that doesn't burn oil — if it's assembled as it should be (but all too often isn't,) the oil consumption will be more-or-less matched by the accumulation of contaminants.

Mine uses about a litre between visits to VW (12 months ~10k)

Fairly acceptable.

I also do interim services at the 6 month mark (about every 5,000kms). Done by me though. Its a very easy car to work on and filters are cheap. Being that you only do it once a year its fairly easy to wait out an oil special too. Cost maybe about 60-70 bucks max incl genuine filter and an oil sale
