Have a look at this article as it gives a good run-down of the different types of alloy wheels/manufacturing methods: Wheel Tech Information - Wheel Construction
"Cheap" replica alloys from places like tempe are generally made with cheaper casting processes and are heavier/not as strong as brand name wheels that often are made with more involved process which gives a lighter/stronger wheel.

As per topic - I can get the Michelin PSS 225/40/18 88Y for $245 each.
Will the 88Y make much difference compared to 92Y ??
Also would it be worth will going for a wider tyre like 245/35/18 - would it fit on a 7.5 inch rim?
Cheers.
Especially given it's the thing connecting you with the road (plus tyres) I'd be very focussed on the last two.
Unfortunately places like Temporary Tyres, Saints and Aussie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi don't specialise in this. If you must buy rep at least get a set with a solid long term reputation like VMRs.

As a former red owner with some bias I will agree with those sentiments.
Certainly Adelaide's best Mk6 GTIs were once a trio of TRs at early VWW meets.

What's the minimum load rating on the fuel flap?
Unfortunately, if you wish to remain within the manufacturers recommendations on an 18x7.5" rim you can't fit 235/40 or 245/35 as they are a minimum 8" rim.
Personally, I think 235/40r18 would be fine but I'm OK with risks like that.
