I’ve been driving a 77 polo and a 110 golf as loan cars for my tiguans issues.
I’ve noticed they both have noticeable shuddering at take off. They both had only 2000 and 7000kms on them!
Surely not a good sign!
Are the dry boxes stil pos’s?

Did a 500km drive today. The car was great overall. Amazing on fuel, great power/torque(110tsi)
Buttttttt, it fried the clutch on a slight(auto hold)incline, hill start from the kerb, just before I got home. About .5-.75 secs of slipping as it attempted to move the car and I then backed off completely (was about 15% throttle) as it smelt and then for the 500m it was to get home, the trans was ****. High revs, slipping as it changed and wouldn’t climb into my driveway from the 30degree gutter face. I Had to back up and ‘ram’ the car up off the road and onto my concrete.
Hopefully a cool down is all it needs. But still mighty worrying for a 7500km car.
Car drove fine yesterday, although the interior still smelled of burnt clutch- 24hrs later. Which wasn’t ideal in a 5mth old car.
I feel these dry clutch units are still a sensitive and fragile thing. I don’t believe they’re fit for purpose. Especially now that the golf has such a torquey bottom-end in the 110tsi motor. It really puts a big load on the clutch from the moment it starts to engage.
I can’t imagine how they’d handle towing a 750kg trailer from an incline takeoff more than once or twice in a session. Or back into an uphill driveway smoothly/without overheating.
Driving one while it’s in optimum condition and having instant access to a second car- mostly great.
Owning one- no thanks.
Owning one after 5 years- never.
When Toyota starts using them I’ll reconsider, otherwise no thanks.

If your daughter has a nursing shift starting at midnight 30 kms away, would you prefer she took the 5 year old automatic Corolla or the ‘automatic’ Polo/Golf?.
