The car can deadlock (or not depending on how you set it up) the inner door handles when you lock them with the remote. Makes things a bit harder for thieves but also prevents anyone you might lock in the car from getting out. Not good if it's your kids and it goes on fire. Good if you are a kidnapper and stop at the servo for fuel on your way to your lair.
If you do need to lock kids in the car I think the button on the B pillar stops the alarm going off when they move. Check the manual on that one though. I thinks it's main reason is to prevent the alarm going off if the car needs to be towed or something like that.
