If anyone wants a Polo, Golf or Passat diesel, get it soon (very soon) and plan on keeping it for years because VW will stop making them. That’s if they haven’t stopped already...
Looking for:- RS4 B7 Avant.
Current:- Amarok V6 Sportline; Mazda CX-9 Azami AWD
Previous - Mk 6 R manual; Mk 7 R manual; Passat 130 TDi Wagon. Mk 7.5 Wolfsburg Wagon.
Yep that's why i got my 7.5 diesel alltrack was going to wait for the mark 8 glad i didn't
Manual might make a return with Mk 8 but wait and see. The main reason for manual going off the table is the new testing rules making it impractical to homologise/adapt/test so many variants in a short time period for a car that’s already on sale.
That might change when testing of each model is built into a normal model development cycle. I don’t know enough about these new rules to say for sure though. It might be that manuals can’t pass the new real world testing. Time will tell.
Diesel is definitely dead though. That’s a VW choice, partly brought on by tougher rules on diesels emissions, but also by advances in petrol efficiency which have taken away the main selling point of diesel for many - economy.

What VW will be doing is WLTP testing the highest volume sellers in each category first.
Manual is a niche model variant so this will be towards the end of the list for getting tested. My guess is you'll likely see it come back in 6-12 months but only once they've cleared the backlog of DSG cars for testing.
