thanks for the feedback. the engine was still warm from the oil change and the plug puller tool is just to the right of the spark plugs in the photo...
I didn't really need the tool as the top of the coil came away from the valve cover easy enough. it was the rubber boot that felt welded to the spark plug ceramic way down the hole. it literally stretched about 50mm before it let go, I thought I was going to rip the boot...
I think its maybe caused by years of heat cycles and eventually welds on. I did spray some lubricant inside the rubber boots to try and prevent it happening in future but I guess it will evaporate over time...
I used a new sump plug from VAG and also bought the removal tool as I hadn't used one of those plugs before and wasn't sure how it worked. an Allen key of screwdriver would have probably been just as good...
hi mate, I think the quality is awesome for the price and wouldn't hesitate to buy again for a daily driver...
I'll report back if anything wears prematurely and take some photos next time I've got the bonnet open...
I’ve decided to try and do an active cruise control retrofit as its one of the modern car features I actually like in a daily car and will make freeway driving up and down the coast much easier…
As I’ve been doing budget upgrades to this car I decided to try sticking with that theme, hopefully it won’t be a tale of buy cheap buy twice…
Apparently my car needs to be equipped with Gateway High and Extended Can which I really should have checked before starting to buy parts…
These are the parts I need as far as I’m aware…
- Front bumper centre grille with radar hole – 5G0853677D
Purchased from ebay for $80
- ACC radar plug – 4F0972708
I won’t be needing this as I bought a loom including the plug from ebay for $40
- MFSW steering wheel switches – 5G0959442N
Purchased from ebay for $200
- Bosch Long Range Radar (LRR) – 5Q0907541D, F, G, H, J, or P
Purchased from a wreckers for $500
- Rear bidirectional ABS sensors – WHT003864A
Need to check if my car already has these fitted
- Component Protection Removal
Currently trying to find a place in Brisbane that can offer this service

An impressive undertaking!
I look forward to seeing how it goes.

some of the parts have arrived, first up the bracket. it's missing the levelling screw etc but I suspect I might end up with another when I buy a radar anyway. I just wanted this to use as a template to drill the crash bar...
next was the wiring harness which I'm very impressed with for $40. it comes with all the loom tape and split conduit...
it also comes with a splitter for connection to the can bus so I can de-pin the existing then plug in to the splitter plug...
steering wheel switches, not cheap. hard to get hold of in the correct part number, I ended up getting these from the UK...
radar, also not cheap but feel like I got this at a good price and from Australia so not suffered the bad weather...
as suspected it came with the bracket and face cover which is good. I might try and cut the other bracket down and use that as the face plate between the bumper and radar bracket...
its a revision J which I haven't read much about however I'm reliably informed it supersedes revision G so lets hope it works...
looks like it has the correct number of pins which is a good start...

my plan for the first stage is to get what I think is the hard part out of the way. drill and fit the radar mount and new grill surround then run the wiring harness from the mount to inside the car via a grommet behind the battery. this will bring the harness in to the cabin near the glovebox and access to the can bus wires at the tiul connector...
the wiring should be pretty easy and I'm fairly confident the below wiring diagram and colour coding is correct. I'll use a fuse tap for the red power wire and a decent ground on the body for the black wire...
tiul wire colour coding on the left to the radar harness pin out on the right:
Or/Gr -> CAN-Bus Extended High -> Pin 2 on Radar
Or/Br -> CAN-Bus Extended Low -> Pin 3 on Radar
next up is the fitting of the steering wheel controls, radar and completing the coding including component protection removal...
Nice work, the ACC is 100% worth it
With the LRR do you get any benefit to running the second can line to the lane assist camera? I know on the MRR you only get 160 Km/h and 210Km/h with the camera in fusion mode. (not that it really matters here, no autobahn)
