Unhappy MK7 R Manual Shift 1-2...is it normal?

I've owned my Mk7 R for over 6 months now and I still cannot accept that the gear change from 1st to 2nd is sooo "clunky"! Is this normal?

Has anyone else experienced this? I still have my mk5 GTI(which I'm trying to sell) and I honestly perfer driving it now. Gear changes are so much smoother.

Massive favour but is there anyone in Melbourne area willing to let me drive their manual R to put my mind at ease as it may be just a characteristic of the new R.

Please don't say I should have bought an auto, I like to drive my cars

Gear change on the Mk 7 is way better than the Mk 6 was. Take it to the dealer.

FWIW one particular manual Mk7GTI I test drove had a similarly crunchy gearshift. It was terrible compared to my Mk5GTI. I mentioned it to the dealer after the drive and he said they would adjust it (can't remember exactly how - something to do with the gate alignment, I think).

So Mk7GR was kind enough to let me drive his manual R. Same thing. So its a common thing and he brought his to the dealer and they pretty much fobbed him off.

I will take mine to them this week and insist they adjust the gate alignment and linkages and report back.

Sorry forgot to update the thread. So i brought it in the technician identified the issue and agreed with me and suggested they adjust the gates. Got it back it is said in the report that it was slightly improved but I dont see the difference so Im gonna go back to them in 2 weeks for them to check it again as they told me to monitor it. There is an obvious aftermarket fix (ie short shifter) which i want to discuss with them to see if they will cover the warranty if this was done. The likelihood is no so then i think i will just live with it. They mentioned also that it is a characteristic of this type of car?!
