Thing is the acceptable engine speed is different in manual mode versus auto so I'm not sure it has to do specifically with that.
Why can the car skip to D2 in D mode from gear 1 at 1500 versus 1800-2000 in manual mode.
Even in manual or tiptronic mode, the gearbox has been programmed to automatically change into a suitable gear if the engine speed is not within the prescribed range, in order to prevent vehicle stall or engine overreving.
First gear in the DSG on the Mk7 Golf 90TSI is fairly short (42 km/h @ 6000 RPM), which may explain why the software does not allow the driver to change from first into second until the engine has reached an acceptable speed.

Lol. I've found that things that stay a certain way for long with Vw are things done in good faith and generally sound reasoning even if to persons on the outside it doesn't make much sense.
It's done to eliminate any chance of stalling. When the car begins to move, the clutch is obviously being progressively disengaged like you would slowly let go of the clutch in a traditional manual. This disengagement period is probably mapped up until the 2000rpm mark as a worst case (heavy load, hill start) and so to avoid damaging the clutch and gearbox, they probably just not allow you to shift until it reaches 2k, where it's definitely disengaged. There's that and the cars assumption that if you are starting off in tiptronic, you're after a fast start so you're probably wanting more than 2.5k revs anyway.
Auto mode shifts into 2nd asap (18kph) because the car is in full control and can overcome any stalling by modulating the clutch and throttle itself.
Another side note. If you leave the car in first at slow speed, you'll feel how jerky it is, that's both engine braking and clutch modulation at work.
Hi guys, I have read somewhere prior that some of the golfs have this option. Or I believe I had read it. Does anyone know if this comes standard on these cars, and if so how to use it? Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
Stiv: according to the Golf brochure that I have, the 90 TSI Comfortline does come standard with the mirror tilt function. The only model that doesn't have the mirror lowering function is the basic 90 TSI.
To use the function you first need to enable it. The process for enabling the tilt function goes like this:
- Turn on the ignition,
- Put the car in neutral, or park.
- Press the CAR button, then select Setup (bottom RHS of the next screen - the symbol that looks like a couple of gears), then press Mirror and Wipers, then select Mirror lowering in reverse
- Exit the screen
- Put the car into reverse.
- Select the passenger mirror (i.e. L position) with the knob on the driver door and adjust the mirror so that you get a good view of the curb.The position of the mirror will be saved.
- Take the car out of reverse and the passenger mirror will return to the normal position.
To use the tilt function you must have the mirror knob set to L position (for Australian cars). The instructions in the manual (see page 124 for the full instructions) wrongly say to have the knob on the R position.

Step 6! I missed Step 6!
When I got my car both mirrors would move when adjusting and at this time I was looking at the tilt function and thought, "This tilt angle is useless" found in the menu how to disable the adjust both mirrors at once and then never looked in to changing the view on the mirror when tilted, I just left the mirror knob in neutral position so it would not move. Now I'm itching to get back to my car to try step 6.

Hi all,
2013 October build comfortline dsg owner. Trouble free motoring for about a year, then this morning when I was about to engage the cruise control I got this error. Car is at about 8000km, no other issues. Anyone seen this error? I'm away from the car now and haven't been able to look up the error in the manual yet.
