After 5+ months of owning my MK VII Highline I have come to the conclusion that the factory SatNav is pretty crap.
*Usually never sends me to my destination via the most direct route possible.
    *Direction announcements are repeatedly late.
*It cant even pronounce the word 'road' correctly (i dont particularly know why but this one really ****s me)

Apart from this the car is a cracker, however given the wife and I felt the SatNav was part of the drawcard for going with the Highline over the Comfortline it has taken a little bit of the shine off our new (VW) car purchase.

I have to agree, the Sat Nav is almost a waste of space. Despite being the latest maps it still directs me to turn right across multi lane divided roads, wrong way up one way streets and the pronunciation of almost everything may as well be in one of the lost languages. Overall the unit is really sub standard and not worth anywhere near what VW are charging for it.

I haven't used an in-car satnav that comes anywhere near a good quality portable satnav. The problem isn't exclusive to VW.

Maybe try TomTom. I've had Garmin, Navman, iGo and they are as bad as they can be. They just don't compare to the latest TomTom. I've bought TomTom Go 600 2weeks ago and so far the navigation and the operating speed of it is the best out there, at least for me. I like the life speed and red light camera updates, and the traffic updates are quite good and accurate as well.

But, I'd still go with the latest VW unit, if it was available for my T5. Why? Because it integrates with the car and it doesn't hang from the windscreen.

Maybe one day VW will use TomTom in their units as some other manufacturers already do.

TomTom: great when they work but the failure rate is huge. My mate at DSE reckons he gets 30% returns on TomTom.

    I've had Navman & wouldn't buy again.

Currently have a middle-range Garmin bought in 2011 & based on a survey of 1 unit I'd buy again. I don't have it mounted on the windscreen - it's mounted where the ashtray is.

Integrated is nice as a selling feature though.

ive tried a couple of different brands and personally i would stick with Garmin...
hope vw sends out firmware updates to improve the performance of the current satnav.

So my partner has been looking for a suitable vehicle to replace his troublesome Golf GT (awesome car aside from the issues). Looking at something a bit more basic this time around and the 90TSI DSG is in contention at the moment. Few quick questions:

    • iPod Connectivity through a simple USB port in the MK7 or does the music on SD Card work more efficiently?
    • Any real advantages in forking out for the Comfortline aside from the Climate/Wipers/Camera items?
    • Has anyone had any issues in replacing the standard hubbies with nicer wheels? In turn, would this greatly affect the current drive away deals?

Appreciate any advice on these matters. Been following the forums for a while and it seems as though most are quite please with their MK7.

iPods/iPhones won't work when plugged into the USB, the port only charges the device. You will need to transmit the audio via Bluebooth or the AUX jack. In your case, I suggest the SD card as you can see track information and also change the songs.

I'd say if you can afford the extra $3000 or so, the Comfortline might be worth it. Just on top of my head you get these extra features:
    - 16" Alloy wheels
    - Climate control air con
    - Auto wipers
    - Auto headlights
    - Front and rear parking sensors
    - Rear camera
    - Better seats
    - Seat pockets (behind driver and passenger seats)
    - Arm/cup holder in the rear middle seat
    - Sunglasses holder (near rear view mirror)
    - Lights on top of sun visor

You don't need all those features, but they do add a nice touch to an already fantastic car

Not sure what you mean with the last question, but you can always add the optional wheels for a bit more (around $800). But I suggest you negotiate for them to be included with the driveway deal.

    Hi guys,

As with so many posters, I'm a big Golf fan and have been contemplating for a little while getting one. This will be my first new car, however not being a car enthusiast, hoping to pick your brains on a couple of questions:
    - Does the Comfortline model come with any sort of Media system? Along with a built in sat-nav (which I'm not interested in), I see the Highline comes with a Media center. If Comfortline does come with something similar, what are the differences between it and Highline?
    - I'm looking at getting the 6 speed Manual Comfortline, which has a driveaway tag of $28,766. Is there any room for negotiation on this with the dealers? Are there any in Melbourne that are particularly good and are willing to negotiate? If not, is it easier to negotiate add-ons rather than a standalone discount?
    - Are there any additional accessories I should consider getting over and above the standard model?
    - I will need to pay half of the cost through VW Finance. Does anyone know what sort of interest rate these guys work on? Assuming it's best to get registration sorted through them?

Any help would be most appreciated. Apologies in advance if many of these questions have already been answered!

    Cheers
