I googled the local radio stations, copied their logos and used Photoshop to resize them to 400x 250 (?from memory, although the requirements are in the Discover Media manual). Copied the resized logos onto a SD card and installed on to the head unit.

    CarAdvice - Hatch Roundup Test

The latest issue of the CarAdvice E-mag has a great hatch round-up review including the current MkVII Golf. I must say the Golf really stands out in terms of the look of the dash/wheel, that piano black on the steering wheel looking very classy. The other badged hatch interior photos looked poor in comparison. No surprise that the Golf did really well in the round-up.

    One month in

    Hi all,

My 103 TSI is now one month old and I've put about 2700kms on it and so far so good. Thought I might do a quick recap on the car so far and how it is going.

    - The piano black is really easy to live with, I do keep a cloth in the car and give everything a quick wipe when stuck in traffic (I've done this with all my cars regardless).
    - The engine is great, but not as good as the 118 but I would consider a tune down the track, still not 100% on the stop start system. Sometimes it can be a tad jerky when starting again and cause some lag. It helps to jump off the break and start the car before the lights go red, I turn it off in heavy traffic.
    - The fuel economy is really impressive, from the 50L (it took 52L last fill up) tank I am getting 800-850kms per tank, it is better then the 118 economy wise.
    - DSG - this is my first automatic after always driving manuals. (Disappointed there was no manual option but that's the way the world is going) at take off there is a slight lag but in sport mode it is perfect. I'm thinking it will get better in time.
    - Seats are really supportive and look great, big improvement over the 118.
    - Discover media - The sat nav is a huge step up over the RNS system, so far it is really accurate with speed limits and lane guidance. I hate the Bluetooth music streaming and will be loading a sd card with music just to make it easier to select a song/ artist via the head unit. Traffic is a waste of a button as with voice, to hard to write mute on the voice button I guess.
    - No noticeable noises or build quality issues in the cabin, it's a nice place to be and I do think it is a big step up and less cluttered compared to the other cars in the class.

Overall I'm impressed and I'm happy with the purchase I made, I have had a good run with my VW's and I hope it keeps going. In saying that, I do sometimes find myself missing the manual and the 118 engine that my fiancé gets to enjoy now but with both sitting in the garage I do get the best of both worlds. As an everyday drive you cannot go wrong, but when the budget increases in 5 years the R will be next!!

    Sorry for the novel guys.

    Cheers

Thanks for the report nick118. Loved it. Can I ask does the traffic button provide any traffic reports even on screen?

Glad you're enjoying the new ride. I'm finding myself turning off the stop-start system as well (in my CC - I doubt its saving me much fuel anyway). When the stop-start is on (when I forget to switch it off), I do what you do - lift my foot of the brake just before traffic moves/lights change as otherwise the lag is annoying.

Re: DSG, its only a slight lag from standing start (and occasionally a bit lumpy in changing into second when pushing hard from standing start) - you get used to it fairly quickly, and easily avoid it by giving it a little build in acceleration before pushing through. Sounds like Sports mode is even better in MkVII, nice

The best thing about the DSG is that - believe it or not - it's more efficient than a manual, helping fuel efficiency.

The 2013 CC still has the RNS510 but I'm glad you shared your thoughts on the Discover Media. Only thing I miss from the Golf is a mute button on steering wheel.

    Hi nick118,

Thank you for your thoughts. I am very appreciative of your novel!

I have just ordered a 103TSI Highline myself and am bouncing off the walls waiting for it to be delivered to the dealer!

Ecstatic that you feel so highly about the car. Am really looking forward to get behind that wheel, as it is my first VW and first Euro car.

Quick question, either for yourself, or anyone else - does the 103TSI have the famous 'launch control' like the GTI? I haven't been able to find anything referring to it online and forgot to ask the dealer.

Cheers. Thanks again for the very honest account of your experience with the new Golf.

Anyone know much about the current media hysteria with failing VWs? I'm hoping it is mainly hysteria, but don't have enough experience with VW to know if the current VW approach of raising the drawbridge is typical, or if they just haven't got their act together yet.
