I rang the local dealer back who left me a message after seeing him this past weekend, then he asked me what car I was interested in - I would have thought in terms of notes a dealer would take along with my details is what car I looked at. Anyways...I was telling him people are ordering Rs with Dynaudio already and he says probably not arriving in Australia until third quarter 2018 and can't order it now. I might need to speak to someone else...

I think your dealer is trying to get you to buy current stock because that is absolute rubbish.

I was shown the list of current golfs that met my requirements I could get my hands on, they we either in or about to finish production.
I have signed a contract and mine is due here on the 3/4/18

The golf R with the option to have Dynaudio (MY18.5) began production in week 45 in 2017

I am shocked to hear that VW salespeople would talk rubbish?!

Although you gotta remember that the vast majority of VW salespeople are only there for the better cut of the jib and coffee over their previous Toyota job and otherwise struggle with the basics in life.*

IMO the real problem with the Australian method of selling new cars is that the business model doesn't allow for salespeople to be properly rewarded for loyalty to the brand, as they work for a dealer, not the manufacturer, and much of their income is commission based. As a result it is all about moving metal, whatever it takes. This leads to much dissatisfaction on both sides of the sales desk.

Not sure about the rest of you, but I always wondered how Ford could so quickly pull so much grunt from 2L when VW had their work in progress for a number of years with a block designed ground up for turbocharging. And for a brief moment, I considered an RS. Before I saw a picture of one. Then I saw the interior. Then I remembered who was making the thing. But I digress ... here's some really bad press on the RS motor. I'd feel even better if anyone could substantiate what they're on about ...

I'm always wary of anything "new" (ie unproven and not run in the real world for a year or so), but in the case of the Focus RS I couldn't get past the high seating position ( I banged my head getting in one), and the excessively harsh (for me) ride. It did accelerate well and go around corners fast.

To this day probably one of the best buying experiences I had was with a dealer that basically didn't run commissions - his 'sales' guy was top notch.

As a pure weekend blast car I understand the RS is probably the pick of the bunch from a drive perspective, and it's exterior looks are aggressive but in a cleaner Euro kind of way. But as my car is a daily, the Golf wins every time because I spend my time inside it and it's a clear winner there. The fact that it's roomy, looks great on the outside and will age well, and is still fun IMO is the icing.

I understand Ford are acknowledging the issues and offering fixes. About the opposite of the VW approach by the sounds of it..

The Type R is getting some good reviews but I could never get past that ridiculously stupid exterior - how did they go from the Accord Euro 7 (which 16 years later still looks great) to this piece of plastic crap? The new Megane looks classy.. but I'm not big on the cheese eating surrender monkeys.
