It is also like people who want super grippy tyres but with coopeer tyres 80,000km mileage and prius tyres noise level.
No you have it all wrong. I for one absolutely love my R and wouldn't give it up for anything - easily the best car I have ever owned.
Love the exhaust note but hate the cabin drone which happens when slowing to an intersection using engine braking.
It is an amazing car in every way with the edge taken of by a stupid bit of programming.

Not sure if an "R" thing of just a VW thing but just curious if anyone else got a free gift for a "$1200" experience with Verve Portraits in the mail?

    Everyone gets them.
Not transferable to a photoshoot of the car, just some stupid portraiture thing.

Drone is actually a resonance or in this case to be more specific a cabin vibration which assuming your hearing is OK can be fairly distressing to some listeners. A good tuned exhaust note is inspiring, a drone is just plain annoying and for certain is NOT designed into a cars DNA. In fact the main reason IMO that the 7R has the exhaust valves installed is to alleviate this drone whilst allowing the exhaust note to be louder and nicer at other speeds.

The drone we talk about by its nature is a low frequency 40 - 50 Hz (1200 -1600rpm) trailing throttle or under load up a hill and is caused by low gas flow through the exhaust - so the idea of the valves is that under those situations, where gas flow is low you reduce the exhaust volume i.e. close the 2 outer pipes, gas flow increases and the drone goes away.

This problem seems to be specific to the detuned cars in Australia, Japan and S Africa as far as I can tell. The valve control is done from the ECU, so have the valve position parameters been altered inadvertently during the detune? If so it may well be that a small adjustment to the engine control program would fix it.

To my knowledge there is only one guy on the UK forums (and he is from Melbourne) who has added a hotdog glass filled resonator with some success as he claims the drone is reduced by about 15 - 20% and interestingly the exhaust volume has increased in the cab.
Hi team, I'm the guy who added the resonator and it has made a small difference. However Car is going back to dealer in two weeks time. I think the detuned ecu has messed with the flapper switches but vw Australia are impossible to deal with so I don't expect a fix. Perhaps somebody out there with a good knowledge of vcds could help us with code changes. Noel

Hey mate, are you taking the car back specifically for the "drone"?

My rear passenger window motor has died and is due for replacement, both rear doors make a bad squeaking noise from the rubber seal rubbing on the body when opened/close and there is a rattle in the front passenger-side door. Just curious if those are all valid complaints for a near $70k RRP vehicle to make?

I am also a little concerned about fitting a Milltek cat-back exhaust next week sometime as I feel the passenger-side door rattle is caused by the exhaust note at low RPMs and hope that the aftermarket exhaust does not exacerbate the issue and go through the process of taking the exhaust on and off...

Yes it's for the drone, but I can imagine the loudness could cause vibration related rattles. Eg my boot lid buzzes when off throttle when the drone is at its worst. Have you found an after market exhaust that takes car of the flaps on/off?

As far as I could tell the Milltek is a direct replacement already prefitted with butterfly valves and motors.

ETA is Wednesday so will confirm asap.
