Haha yeah I definitely didn't give it any on the way home above 3k so it should be fine and was constantly speeding up to 110 and back to 100 then 90 on the freeway most of the way back until the car clicked over 1500km

Oil on the gauge sits comfortably at 90 but when you look it up on the MFD it sits around 104 degrees, really makes me wonder how accurate that gauge on the tacho is or if it is stuck on 90, but I highly doubt it

Am calling up vwa today to see when and if I can get the turbo recalled and will update results on that today.

Whats the go with the turbo recall?

How many times has this question been asked? Refer to your owner's manual. Whatever advice is given by other forum members, which is different to what's stated in the manual, will be at your own risk or detriment.

Just asking opinions, at the end of the day it is the owner's decision to do whatever they want but I was more curious as to any other precautions that people may take beyond what is stated in the manual. Also, apologies my R only gets to the port on Friday so I don't have an owner's manual

The gauge is the water temp, the MFD is the oil temp. The water will sit at 90, it is temperature regulated to get it there as fast as possible from cold and to keep it there once 90 is reached.

Hey Mikey, when is your manual R due? (Might well be on my boat due in to Melb late Sept?)

I believe that might be the case, however, using the shipping/VIN tool, to date, "No records found". Therefore, it appears my original ETA estimate will miss end of September and be more likely an October arrival, which isn't necesarily a bad thing, as the warmer weather can only help shift my old chariot with a sunroof.

Doesn't matter how old is the engine, never go into high revs until engine oil is at operating temperature. Round gauge on the dash is for coolant temp, it will show 90 degrees after about 3 km on the open road. That does not mean that engine is warm and you can give it a go.
Oil temperature is shown on the MFD only and it will take about 20 km on the open road to reach 90 degrees or higher. At this point engine and gearbox are at normal operating temperature and you can go WOT.

Cool this is the info I was really looking for.

It being my/our first new performance car I don't want myself or my partner to be reckless.

Yeah I hadn't had the chance yet to look into the difference in the gauges so yeah, good to know, cheers guys

I barely give the car any berries, probably gone wot once or twice since owning it....

It seems quite a long time that it takes about 20 km for the engine oil to reach normal operating temperature on the open road, considering the engine coolant is at normal operating temperature after just 3 km, and must provide some assistance in warming the engine oil. Of course, ambient air temperature must be a factor, but still our weather conditions in most parts of Victoria in winter are not frigid.
