Better than spraying mud/grime down the side of the car when it rains, or at people driving behind you!

Also helps stops the back of your hatchback getting dirty before the rest of the car

My experience with mud flaps on all my many different cars over the years is that they do little to nothing in protecting it from stone chips to water and grime spray and on a mk7 Golf must be a complete waste of time and money (to say noting of the negative looks). My mk7 Golf is the first car I've owned that has no protection yet it is by far the best at not getting spray or stone damage up the side of the car. I just assume that it's designed to avoid that sort of thing as much as possible. It runs the 16" wheels with 205/55 tyres. My Forester with muds flaps front and rear, higher ground clearance and protective plastic cladding all along the lower sides has suffered infinitely more stone chip damage than my Golf. In fact over the 40,000km of driving, the Golf doesn't have any chipping at all. Grime collection across the rear of the car is another thing and no mud flaps will change that. Aerodynamics and low pressure area cause that. And it certainly no worse than the Forester.

R Exhaust system in Race Mode 2+2 pipes - GOLFMK7 - VW GTI MKVII Forum / VW Golf R Forum / VW Golf MKVII Forum
"In “Comfort”, “Normal” and “Race” mode the butterfly valves for the two outer exhaust pipes are open. Good basy sound!

In “Eco” mode the outer pipes are closed.

Turned of - open. Default mode is open."

I killed my R last night on a country highway doing 100 km's when a 1 ton bull materialised. Amazingly I walked away without a scratch, good work VW safety systems!! Whilst I loved the R may look at a GTI performance in Candy White as the sensible choice...will think it over...

Holy crap mate! Glad you are ok! That's the most important thing. Hope everything with insurance sorts itself out. I have a white GTI Performance with driver assist pack and leather. Absolutely brilliant car and the white sets off the highlights really nicely. Good luck with everything.

OMG Andrew, that's really bad luck. Amazing you walked away. I hope you reconsider and buy another R. After all, it wasn't the car's fault. Imagine if you were on just two wheels.
