I have also read some owners don't bother, but I think it would look incomplete if all the other side windows were tinted.
Per the tint thread almost none will touch it though. FWIW it looks fine untinted, it's just too small to be noticed visually inside or out particularly with the side mirror obstructing the view from some angles and the fact the window opens directly onto dark interior plastic. The only way I see it might be an issue is if someone had a white car and went with an extremely dark (read illegal) tint finish as part of a black n white look.

Hey guys, finally secured my R today! White, DSG, Leather, Drivers Assist and Roof - delivered late next week. It's the biggest purchase I've made in my life (bar the deposit on our unit) but it's something I needed to get myself for the big 3 0.

Would like to gather some thoughts from other fellow VW owners out there with regards to the 'after-sales' options on what's worthwhile, and where I could land myself a better deal (Sorry this is my first brand new car purchase so I'm a little clueless, and still slightly overwhelmed).

    - Paint Coating (something Nano): I suppose this is like the Opti Coat everyone's talking about? This one comes with lifetime warranty and they told me that I can go back for any repairs etc. if there is damage to the paint. Quoted: just below $1k

    - Leather Preserver: Not interested in this TBH (I don't park it under the sun and I'm not large/heavy to put stress on the leather) unless you guys think it's absolutely important? Quoted: just below $700

    - Tinting: 35% Highest legal tint with shatter proof, reducing heat and glare by 60%. This I'm actually interested in but wonder if there are better ones from 3rd party providers. Quoted: $600

Would appreciate any feedback at all on where best to get them done around Sydney or I should just do it at the dealer.

    Thanks heaps!

    No to the above.

I'm not sure what a detailer in Sydney charges for a detail and Nanolex application but should be less than $1k. As a guide I'm getting a detail and Opticoat including wheels for well under $500 locally in Adelaide. I don't believe there is much cost difference between the two products.

I've just bought the Nanolex textile and leather treatment for $65 delivered from CCP, I will be reporting back on how it goes shortly.

And tint should be about half that cost.

The new S3 is an amazing machine and in my opinion ****s all over the R. It's no way I would be paying anywhere near $60k for a R as I would pay the bit extra get a S3
Based on the quote I received from a Melbourne Audi dealer for an S3 Sportback with every option except the Black Exterior Styling Package, even before any negotiating commenced, would have been $80K with corporate pricing. Forum members have been commenting in this thread about the possibility of obtaining discounts of up to $10K. However, unless the on-road costs in your state are substantially less than here in VIC, $67K would be an exceptional price.

Your comment that the S3 is far superior to the R would be open to a lot of conjecture. What wouldn't be debated is the fact the R's combined standard and optioned specification is no match to that of the S3, but the dynamics and aural pleasure is another matter.

    Manual Transmission vs DSG

Contributors to this thread have either purchased, are thinking of purchasing or just talking about DSG Golf R's. Apart from myself, is there anybody out there whose mindset is in the manual transmission camp. I'm feeling very isolated on my own!

I was just reading the manual for Limey and it is engrossing simple reading (not). In terms of the driver assistance package can someone confirm whether lane departure warning IS or IS NOT fitted to AU spec R's please? Also how does the front assist feature work (is it only part of the city emergency braking thingy... or can it be set as a standalone feature. Finally - how do I get the front assist/city emergency braking to work?

    thanks

Pretty sure that the golfs do not come with lane assist. Not sure why as it's offered on a3 and golfs overseas.

Capped Price Servicing - Golf GTI, Golf GTI-PP and Golf R

I've done a bit of research on the Volkswagen Australia website for capped price servicing, with the following resultant costs or variances:

    The same pricing applies for each model for the first 3 services up to 45,000 kms or 3 years - $357 (15K/year 1), $357 (30K/year 2) and $417 (45K/year 3).

    For the 60,000 kms or 4 years service: GTI manual - $573, GTI DSG -$991, GTI-PP - $991, R DSG - $991

    The same pricing applies for each model for the 5th and 6th services - $357 (60K/year 5) and $417 (75K/year 6).

Additional items not included in the above, where I'm only quoting variations:

GTI-PP: Front Diff Lock Oil (every 3 years) - $169
R: Haldex Fluid Change (every 3 years) -$165

    Conclusions:
GTI-PP (DSG) costs $4 more to service than DSG R after 45,000 kms or the 3rd year.
GTI manual transmission model saves $418 on servicing when compared to its DSG sibling, presumably due to the DSG oil and filter change at the 60,000 kms or 4 years service. I would expect a similar saving would apply to the manual R when compared to the DSG version. For manual transmission models, their transmission/transaxle oil is supposedly filled for life, though I know many would change the oil at some point.

I've reviewed my S3 quote. It's every option expect the black exterior option [$500] and the price was $67,956.. Rrp was $76k and all my audi friends nearly fell off their chairs as it seems this is a great price...

I've now spoken to 5 VW dealers in regards to the golf R, the best price I could get was a white R with leather for $57,509 drive away.... 4 dealers were not discounting at all.....

Looks like I will go the S3 as I feel it ****s on the R in every thing.. The interior of the S3 is just incredible...

Its not available on the Octavia either, I can only assume it hasn't been tested/approved for use on our roads. It works by using a camera near the rear view mirror so I guess it needs to be tested pretty thoroughly. Its a shame because it can also automatically recognize traffic signs and show the speedlimit on the MFD screen.
