Had a test drive today, for reference I'm driving a Mk6 Golf R.
Good-
The increase in power is very noticeable, to be honest it feels like a lot more than ~20kw. Having (briefly) owned a CLA45 and driven an A45 it felt more like them than a Mk6 R.
The launch control is very very impressive. In the Mk6 it was a bit meh, this really felt quick and put a huge smile on my face.
The DSG seemed a tad smoother off the line, otherwise no different to the Mk6.
The steering was much nicer, I always found the steering in the Mk6 to be too heavy, the Mk7 has a much nicer weight to it. Turning circle seemed a little better (my Mk6 is the 19" version that can't do a u-turn on a football field).
The panoramic sunroof was nice, didn't intrude in the cabin or reduce head height at all.
The indifferent-
It's louder, this will be a personal preference. For me I don't need to be reminded I'm driving a fast car, and I don't need to make sure everyone on the footpath knows it too, so I'm not fussed about it being loud. It's a nice noise, not too intrusive (unlike the AMG 45's).
The styling will again be personal preference. I don't mind an understated car, again I don't need the styling to tell everyone I'm in a fast car, but it is a little bland.
Unlike WhiteJames I can't write a paragraph about a pothole, so all I will say, having driven my Mk6 R to and from the dealer, is the suspension felt exactly the same to me. I don't like too firm a ride, and I didn't feel the Mk7 was any firmer than the Mk6.
The Bad-
Oh my god that GPS screen is terrible. In this day of HD, Retina displays etc etc to put in such a rubbish screen is almost a deal breaker.
The gloss black console looks a bit tacky, I looked in a PP GTi and it had a lovely matt textured trim that looked so much nicer than the gloss in the R.
The GPS screen is terrible.
No electric seats? Really?
Did I mention the screen?
