Anyone had this dilemma before?
The only way I'd place a deposit/sign a contract is if the price was significantly in your favour. You could write into the sales contract a % discount off the RRP or a fixed value that you feel represents "good value". Then it's up to the dealer whether they decide to break the contract once the pricing is released. If they want to "bag" an early sale then it should be in your favour not theirs. They are only stopping you from going somewhere else so the dealer should pay a premium for "locking in" an early sale.

That's the way I look at it anyway.

Yeah, they did say I could put a conditional deposit down, subject to pricing etc., and refundable if pricing wasn't up to what I wanted. I think you are right Dutch77. They have stiff competition with the S3 at such a reduction from the old model's pricing ($70k+?). My hope is that VW follow suit early to remain competitive and to warrant the diff btn the S3 from above and the GTI PP from below. Otherwise it may be better to wait for a bit and they realise they are not competitive...

I just test drove a GTI at Ipswich VW today and they had a white PP in the showroom. To be honest I didn't realise what it was but I noticed it had 19" wheels. I just logged in to find out whether the R is going to be worth the extra over the GTI for me if I decide to purchase in the next few months. Got a few more pages of this thread to read I think.

Would be surprised if the R is less than $65k fully optioned drive away, problem is they need to keep a sizeable margin between the GTI, PP & the R, & like the new gti they will claim "but half the features that where options On the mk6 are now standard on this model", which really means we ripped you off on the last model & we've increased the price a little on this model cause we can't get away with charging for those options now.

How VW should really structure there prices as imo there a bit overpriced:

Sell only the following models: GTI BASE cloth interior, GTI PP fully optioned leather sunroof all available options, R FULLY OPTIONED

GTI BASE: manual $39500 dsg $41500 drive away

GTI PP FULLY OPTIONED: manual $47,000 dsg $49,000 drive away

GOLF R FULLY OPTIONED: manual $57,000 DSG $59,000 drive away

They need to get more competitive as competition is coming in from everywere like the new type r civic next year

So if anyone wants to fly me to Germany I'm happy to submit these prices to VW for you all lol

I didn't think there was a manual PP for australia?

As for the Civic R... Honda have already backed down on their Nurburgring claims since the Seat Leon Cupra R 280 did that sub 8 min lap.
Too little too late I think from honda.

There isn't. I think that was just Rogue Wolf's suggested range and pricing (or dream anyway). I half agree with the ideas, although the VW style sunroof is not something I'd want to be 'forced' to take just to get the other options.

As for Honda, they've totally lost the plot these days. The existing Type R is ugly, and the mock ups of the new one aren't any better. That Seat looks nice, if they do go ahead and bring the brand back in 2016 that might be another drain on buyers from VW although they'll probably run into the same brand recognition issues that Skoda has.

If the sales figures I've seen recently are any indication, SEAT might replace Skoda in 2016! If the new Octavia doesn't improve their sales by a factor of 4, I can't see how they remain profitable. It's a shame because they make genuinely good cars, they just don't seem to know how to make people pay attention to them.

Annoyingly, I have to wait until Q3 or Q4 to receive my almost identical order with manual transmission. My pre-order contract will be torn up if we don't agree on price, and I will be pushing hard for a good deal. For those following this thread, it's clear that members are flocking to the Audi S3 in droves for different reasons. On this basis. Volkswagen dealers should be grateful when Golf R customers come knocking on their door.
You are spot on. Got the spec, got the exact car on its way but have no idea on the price yet. In my pre-order contract we have a ceiling price, if it doesnt come under that, then I wont proceed.

As for the Audi, I have to admit im surprised at the exodus. Dont get me wrong, in Feb I went straight the Audi dealer and said "sign me up" but when I saw the actual price I balked - it was just under $80k onroad. A good chunk of that was the $4k dealer delivery neither dealer in my area would budge on. I might be naive but I am expecting a similar spec'd R to be around $65.

I don't think you're comparing apples with apples. I too went to my nearest Audi dealership and was quoted $78.7K RRP on-road with many of the popular options, including S Performance Package. But with the exception of magnetic ride, none of the other options contained in this package are available in the Golf R. Also, there are numerous other omissions and differences which makes a direct comparison difficult. To complicate things, you can obtain corporate pricing on the Audi, which makes a significant difference to the dealer delivery fee and servicing. There is no corporate pricing available on the Golf R. I assume stamp duty differences between states also needs to be considered. Anyway, for me on a closest like-for-like basis, there will be circa $10K difference, which for me is significant, but apparently for others is acceptable. Also, unlike others, I don't like the Audi S3 interior or wheels and the fact that to get a pure white colour, you have to select Glacier White Metallic, costing an additional $1050.
