I went to see my dealer to make sure my GTI will be right for delivery next week and he said April 12 for the R as well, with training just before that.

Pricing will likely not be announced until 10/04/14. The good news is that the pricing strategy should be similar to the GTI where the MQB platform helped contain pricing to just $1,000 more than the outgoing Mk6. This translates to $50,990 for manual and $53,490 for DSG. For Victorian customers, if you choose a manual with all 3 factory options, this should keep the total price for stamp duty calculation below the LCT threshold of $60,316 based on current rates. This will realise a saving of at least $1200. Here's the link to the VIC motor vehicle stamp duty calculator for you to play with: State Revenue Office Victoria - Calculator (Motor Vehicle Duty)

I was actually a bit more pessimistic and factored in $53,990, on an increased of $1,500 for the DSG. When I enquired about the corporate discount on the GTI, one dealer said it pretty much just the cost of the dealer delivery while another said they reduce the list price of the base car by 5%. Suffice to say I'm still unsure so let's assume they take off 5%, that will reduce the base DSG to $51,300.

Add all 3 options assume same price as for GTI: leather $3,150, sunroof $1,850, driver assist $1,300

And the total before on roads equates to $57,600. Stamp duty/rego in NSW should be around $3,000.

Dealer delivery is around $3,000 for most dealers and at launch I'm not sure you can negotiate much off this.

So with corporate discount I would say for those of us in NSW the drive away price would not exceed $63,600.

I don't think the R will be subject to lux car tax Mikey1, understand that for fuel efficient cars with a combined consumption of 7lt per 100km or less the threshold jumps to about $75,350. The R in DSG is 6.9 and the manual is 7lt so I'd say the higher threshold would apply to both transmissions.

Yes who does eligible for the corporate discount? I can get corporate discount at Audi but not Vw. I think this is strange.

The corporate program is available to eligible employees of the top 200 ASX listed companies by way of market capitalisation. However, the Volkswagen fleet manager who looks after the company I work for advised the new Golf R will be excluded from the corporate program. I suspect this might not have been communicated to the dealers or their sales staff yet. However, don’t let this exclusion put you off from asking for a discount of at least 5% straight off the dealer’s on-road price. As is always the message in this game, shop around.

Corp pricing on my MK6 GTI (govt employer, Novated lease) gave me 10% of RRP plus reduced dealer delivery. I'd be aiming for 5-10% on the R or base s3 irrespective of corp pricing (Audi offers 3 years free servicing as well)

Will definitely have to negotiate regardless of whether corporate discount is available for the R.

I mean you add leather seats to the R and its within $3k of the S3 plus Audi gives you 3yrs free servicing with their corporate package.

I'm not sure if comparing the Golf R with the base S3 on price is fair due to a difference in standard specification of each. For example, the adaptive suspension, or magnetic ride control in Audi language, is a $1600 option on its own. Metallic or pearl paint another $1050, rear seat load through $400 and privacy glass another $700. There is no 19" wheel option for those who may want this. Audi charge a lot more for dealer delivery, unless on corporate program. I know the Audi MMI is superior to the crap VW Discover Media, but these are the performance models in the range, and the priority should be on that.
