Reckon the dealers would take into account the luxury car tax threshold when pricing up and negotiating on the golf R? From what I've read, the most optimistic view is $53k for standard plus ORC, which pretty much takes it up to the LCT threshold. If you want options, it'll surely go over....

If the Golf R has the same 6.9ltr/100km fuel econ as the Audi S3, then LCT won't kick in until just under $75k.

So does the manual S3 have the lower LCT threshold? It's 7.0 ltr/100km.

Not that it makes much difference if your over the LCT by a few bucks. It's not like they whack 30%, or whatever it is, on the whole car.

I'm referring to the R being a few bucks over, not a loaded S3.

I'm guessing if you apply the $2k price increase of the MK7 GTI but with the extra standard equipment then new R would be priced about $52k for the manual and $54.5k for the DSG?

From there you add roughly $3k for onroads (since it's diff for each State) and $3,150 for dealer delivery and the rrp drive-away price becomes about $60.65k before accessories.

Looking at the GTI's standard equipment I would think the only accessories would be leather seats/sunroof/drive assist for the R.

But the last R already comes standard with front and rear sensors so drive assist may be standard.

You can't option Dynaudio for the MK7 GTI so not sure it will become avail for the R.

So I think it's reasonable to assume the new R with DSG/leather seats/mats/tint to cost $64.5k before negotiation.

Will be interesting to see the list price and how much people end up paying.

And as for LCT, it's the threshold is currently $60,316. 33% of every dollar of the ex GST cost of the car above this amount is subject to the LCT. (if the GST inclusive cost is over the thresold then it's subject to LCT but only 33% the ex GST amount over the treshold is taxed).

This excludes on-road costs ie stamp duty and rego/3rd party insurance so if your car costs say $63k drive-away then taking the on-roads away the GST inclusive cost of the car should come in just under the LCT threshold.

The dealer I spoke to said they were anticipating a $59990 drive away price for the base R.

^ if you need to add leather ($3k) to the base R your're pretty much at S3 base pricing which would be a fail in my book. Certainly would make the choice of the premium S3 a no brainer over the ubiquitous boring "Golf"

420 HP (309 kW) and 530 Nm (391 lb-ft) from a 2 litre petrol engine is just insane!!!!
