Interesting to see those numbers though and how the mighty have fallen - 94,000 Commodore were sold in 1998 and it sold in the 80s into the early 2000s. Falcon peaked in the mid 90s with just over 81,000 sales. Conversely last year just 10,610 Falcons found homes - while 8,177 people parked the Toybaru twins in their garages.
Yeah it's all important to some senior executive somewhere that they beat the other brands sales numbers and are 15 vs 16 on the list.

That way they can justify paying themselves a big fat bonus.

Well if it means offering us consumers fantastic deals on an S3 then I'm all for it!!!

Pity that VW is so far away from the next spot on the list there's probably more likelihood of dropping a place than picking one up with all the bad press around VW last year.

According to an article I read yesterday supply should improve in the near future and sales are up 60% this year on the Golfs (albeit against poor supply/run-out on Golf 6 same time last year).

Obviously the improved supply is yet to extend to the R folk.

Any chance of some how getting discovery media pro with 8inch display on Australian models? I just don't understand why we can't have all the overseas options available!

I completely agree.Should be able to get an aftermarket one fitted sometime in the 2nd half of the year.
Also when you look at what we get standard compared to most other countries. I would say we do quite well.
On a side note i should be picking my lapiz blue R up by the end of the month as its at the dealer but as im in New Zealand i havent organised a pick up date. Cant wait. Will keep everyone posted.

A cynic might suggest this strategy alienates potential Golf R customers from the brand, by sending them to its nearest competitor Audi, who apparently are offering generous discounts. Given they're both part of the Volkswagen Audi Group, VAG head office probably don't see this as a bad outcome. Well done to those who have secured an initial launch allocation and received a good deal. They will definitely be in the minority.
Interesting. I was talking to a salesman in Sydney just yesterday who indicated that the two cars he had in stock, a white and a black R, were both sold. However, he was expecting a demonstrator to come in in the next 2 weeks (perhaps one of the VW drive day/press cars) and that he had ordered another which he expected within the next 3 months. Additionally, he said if I ordered today, 3 months is the expected wait time.

I'm not saying he was right, but it does make you wonder. Perhaps your dealer was feeding you that line as justification for not discounting on the car, or perhaps the salesman I spoke to hadn't done his research.

Looks like an issue with maps, and also query whether the cost is worth it:

So a DSG R works out at approx. $5k less than the S3.

I've been reading a lot about ppl who aren't happy with the non premium sound system option and Discovery Pro so are looking at upgrading. Which will almost all but erode the $5k saving for arguably a better sound system but non OEM and an inferior MMI system

What sort of prices are people getting quoted for the S3 (drive away, with options)? Sportback of Sedan version?

As of 2pm on Tuesday 15 April 2014 I know where there are three UNSOLD Golf R's in Melbourne metro dealerships. All dealerships are saying that in general supply should not be an issue based on current projections from VW.
No I am not going to say where the cars are because one may be ours seeing as Audi will not commit to whether they will be bringing the 3 door S3 into Australia any time soon and there is a 8-12 month wait for an A45.
