Does anybody know if the sales of the Scirocco R have met target, and justified VGA from withdrawing the 3-door Golf R from the Australian market to avoid a conflict, where VGA believed the same type of customer would select either? If this marketing strategy continues, we may never see a 3-door Golf R again.
Why would you even want the 3 door model, the resale value on them are shocking, been watching them the past year on carsales gti/r 3 door model they simply don't sell well at all even the well optioned ones & always being reduced in price to resell them.
They need to make the price gap between the 5 door & 3 door more significant to be worth buying, the new sccirico the better 3 door option imo
Thanks for your feedback Rogue wolf. It would seem that VGA are then doing its customers a favour by not offering this configuration. When I ordered my Mk5 GTI back in January 2005, I was disappointed that the 3-door was not going to be available, but now I'm glad I don't have this model. The resale of my Mk5 GTI in Q3/Q4 will be hard enough as a 5-door, though I'm hoping having done only 65,000 kms, mine will stand out from most other Mk5's.
No probs mikey, just my view on 3 doors may be wrong but from what I've seen most would regret it when reselling
65000kms on your 05 gti with all the right options, would think around $13k-$16k, being rare manual gives you a good advantage
Nice order on your MK7 R exactly what I'd have chosen if I had the $$ lol, well optioned manuals are hard to find & resell same price as autos
Surprised more don't buy manual new so much more fun in a sports car
Pretty sure resale isn't great on either model, and as we all know there is almost no return on adding options - there is pages on this in the mk6 section. I couldn't give away my very clean mk6 GTI with under 20k on the clock last year..
Having said that I believe that VWA should at least be providing a 3 door option on the R - it's a niche model and appeals to a different buyer than the GTI (not necessarily just a more cashed up one, although it helps), and there seems sufficient demand to either bring some in or at least allow it by special order.. even if you have to ask for a larger deposit to cover the risk. I'm sure the R 3-door fans would be open to this.

In addition to crash testing numerous models to satisfy the standards here to only sell on small volumes.
Every time a new model comes out we continually get the same small segment begging for a 3-door variant but the majority of the AU market doesn't want it (and if they do they have the option of the Scirocco) so it will never happen.
Problem with the mk6 gti/r the amount of options available where just ridiculous, now with all the competition in the market VW can't get away with it anymore
Life would be easier if car companies just brought out two models Basic & fully loaded & no options to choose from
I thought the 3 door was already ADR approved.
As for parts I can't comment, I don't know how many parts are unique to the 3 door v 5 door. But if there is talk of 3 door specials coming out then any extra sales over the model cycle would surely make it more cost effective.
Ultimately it's there call, I don't mind as I have no interest in the 3 door - to me the whole point of a hot hatch is the practicality of the 5 doors (and no, I'm not looking at re-starting the 3 v 5 mk6 wars, this is just my personal choice).
Re: spec levels Rogue Wolf, agreed. There should be a 'high line' spec that bundles all the options sans sunroof into one model.
